MARKHAM, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago man has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for setting a fire in 2007 that left his pregnant daughter, grandson and son-in-law dead.
Prosecutors said Subhash Chander of Oak Forest set the fire that killed 22-year-old Monika Rani, her husband, 30-year-old Rajesh Arora, and 3-year-old Vansh Kumar because his son-in-law didn’t ask his permission to marry his daughter. Chander is a native of India.
Cook County prosecutors say Chander used a plastic container full of gasoline to start a fire in front of the apartment across the street from his Oak Forest home.
Prosecutors said the 64-year-old Chander, who was sentenced Thursday, argued on and off with his daughter for three years before he set the fire that also left several people homeless.
