Cameron Cleanup Continues as Volunteers Lend A Hand

Volunteer #2 The debris of homes and buildings in the tornado torn town of Cameron remains scattered across yards, as residents continue to clear piles of rubble.

Resident Shannon Atwell told WGIL, that she was renting a home in the near center of town that was completely destroyed. With the sound of chainsaws clearing debris, Atwell and relative Kimberly Binge found it difficult to describe what it was like returning to town and seeing the home completely torn apart.

“There were no words to explain the emotion,” says Atwell. “My grandsons toys everywhere–it’s hard, it’s hard,” adds Binge.volunteer #1

Atwell and Binge added that there has been some volunteer support, but more is needed.

Operation Rebuild Volunteer Mike Lyp is one of those who lent a hand yesterday. Lyp, who has been involved with tornado clean-up in Millington, Michigan, Coal City, and Fairdale, says approximately 40 volunteers came out from his group, but– “You can never have enough until they are done and back to normal or as normal as they can be,” says Lyp. “Please come out and help people because they need your help. Lend a hand, grab a shovel, and try not to stand around. Be productive.”

The Warren County Sheriff’s office says a specialized group will be going through the community to cut and stack wood in the preferred method today in preparation to remove all brush by Wednesday. Authorities are still asking that trees and brush not mix with other debris.Volunteer #3
