DANVILLE, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled a public hearing on a water discharge permit for a proposed underground coal mine in Vermilion County.
Indiana-based Sunrise Coal is seeking the permit for the proposed Bulldog Mine, at the southwest corner of Vermilion County. It would allow the company to discharge alkaline mine drainage into a tributary of Olive Branch waterway.
The IEPA says it’s tentatively determined the discharge would meet water quality standards. It also says the facility would provide an economic benefit to the community.
Sunrise officials say the mine would create 300 jobs.
The hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salt Fork Junior High School in Sidell.
The public may comment at the meeting, or in writing by Sept. 11.
