Fire crews from multiple departments are fighting a fire at the Midwest Awning manufacturing building just off Illinois 164 north of Galesburg.
As of 5 p.m., fire fighters were spraying flames through broken windows and holes in the building’s roof. The Galesburg Fire Department said they received the call for mutual aid shortly after 3 p.m.
Midwest Awning welder Lee Poulson of Galesburg says he was inside the building when it caught flame.
Poulson tells WGIL he and four other employees were working when power to the lights went out. After flipping the circuit breaker, Poulson heard a loud explosion was from the structure’s upstairs.
He saw flames coming from the upstairs ceiling and emptied a fire extinguisher on the blaze before exiting the building along with the other occupants. Poulson says no one was hurt.
Among the crews assisting Cameron Fire were Galesburg, Abingdon, Central Warren, Alexis, RSP&E and Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance Service.
The Midwest Awning building suffered sever damage.
