Knox County finance committee takes step to sue State Comptroller

knox county sealThe Knox County Finance Committee has passed a motion to ask the full board to approve a lawsuit against the Illinois Comptroller.

The lawsuit will be to claim $96,000 in reimbursements owed for the salary of the State’s Attorney, Public Defender and Supervisor of Assessment.

No funds have been received from the state for those items since the budget impasse began in July.

Finance Committee Chairman Greg Bacon brought to the committee that State’s Attorney John Pepmeyer had advised the board to file the suit.

“The State’s Attorney’s Association, they came up with the thing that all counties are probably going to have to file their own lawsuit to start getting their money,” Bacon said addressing committee members. “He said that it might take more time that way, but it would move faster is we file our own lawsuit.”

The measure will be voted on by the full board at their Dec. 23 meeting.

In other business, Supervisor of Assessment Chris Gray’s contract has been renegotiated.

Even though she’s in an appointed position her salary had previously been tied to the election officials.

With her new contract her salary will stay the same for the first three years and then get a 1% raise after the fourth year.
