The First Lutheran Church was packed last night while the Nova Singers celebrated 30 years of performances during the annual Nova Christmas concert.
Ahead of the performance, Nova Singers Director Dr. Laura Lane told Galesburg’s Evening News on WGIL the performance was something of a best-of collection.
“I looked at all the programs of all the past Christmas concerts and I picked what I thought the audience favorites were,” Lane says, “and then I made this big list and asked the singers to put one, two and three by there favorites and I picked from that.”
This year is special not only because it marks the group’s 30th anniversary, but also because the Nova Singers were named a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Challenge America grant.
Lane says the group received a $10,000 grant that she has plans for coming up.
“We got the grant to help us pay for the bluegrass band that’s coming in February,” she says. “Valentine’s weekend. Feb. 13 in Galesburg and 14th in the Quad Cities.”
The band is Monroe Crossing, a group from Minneapolis-St. Paul and they will also be hosting educational bluegrass programs for six graders while in town.
