Donald J. Conroy, 87, of Monmouth, IL died at 4:00 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Monmouth Nursing Home.

 He was born April 8, 1929 in Dwight, IL, the son of William Edward and Mabel Sarah (Fraher) Conroy.  He was raised and educated in Saunemin, IL, graduating from Saunemin High School in 1947.  Following graduation from high school Don played professional baseball for the Washington Senators on their minor league team for a summer before being drafted into the United States Army.

 

Don served with the United States Army as a Paratrooper with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team during the Korean War, participating in 17 jumps.

 

Don married Donna Baehler in Loretta, IL on August 22, 1953 and she survives.

 

He was a feed salesman for the Kent Feed Company for 20 years and later Monmouth Feed Services for 21 years before retiring.

 

Don was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Monmouth, the Monmouth American Legion Post #136 and the Monmouth VFW Post #2301.  He was a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan and loved playing golf.  Don enjoyed spending time with his coffee shop buddies and local farm friends

 

Survivors include his wife; 4 sons, Mike Conroy of Des Moines, IL, Kevin Conroy of Seattle, WA, Curt Conroy of Phoenix, AZ and Cory Conroy of Seattle, WA; his sister, Rita Kelly of Bloomington, IL and his sister in law, Dorothy Conroy of Springfield, MO; several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Aloysius Conroy.

 

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 16, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Monmouth.  Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Friends may call after Noon on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory, Monmouth where his family will be present from 2:00-4:00 p.m. with a Rosary services beginning at 2:00 p.m.  Memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception School.  For more information or to leave an online condolence please visit, www.mcguireanddaviesfuneralhome.com
