Chicago zoo sets date for polar bear exhibit opening

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo has set an opening date for a new polar bear exhibit.

A statement from the zoo says the exhibit, named the Walter Family Arctic Tundra, will open to the public on Nov. 17.

The more than 11,000-square-foot exhibit features a stream, waterfall, dive pools and an ice machine.
The statement says the exhibit will also teach visitors about the impacts of climate change on the ice-dependent animal.

One male polar bear will inhabit the exhibit in time for the opening. Zoo official expect to add a female bear this winter. With hopes of a successful mating program, the exhibit also includes a denning area for any potential cubs.
