SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A 20-year-old Springfield man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for fatally shooting his 17-year-old brother over cash and a dozen pairs of shoes.
The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports Juan Kincade apologized before Wednesday’s sentencing, telling family members “I let you down and I won’t let that happen again.”
Kincade pleaded guilty in December to first-degree murder in the July 30, 2015, shooting of Juwan Kincade. Authorities put the value of the shoes and cash at more than $500.
Kincade’s grandmother, Delores Hill, testified saying her grandson never received proper counseling and medication. Kincade’s attorney has said Kincade has an intellectual disability and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
But Sangamon County Judge John Schmidt said he was troubled by Kincade’s behavior in jail including be kicked out of a drug rehabilitation program.
