Chicago police dog sniffs out 1,500 pounds of marijuana

MIDLOTHIAN, Ill. (AP) – A Chicago police dog is credited with sniffing out more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana valued at over $10 million.

Police say they pulled over a pickup truck hauling a trailer in the Chicago suburb of Midlothian. Officials suspected the truck was involved in trafficking narcotics, The Daily Southtown reports.

Their suspicions were confirmed when the police dog on duty was alerted to the scent of cannabis. Police recovered more than 1,500 pounds of pot and other cannabis-related products.

The driver was 42-year-old Jason Tanner from Lakehead, California. Police say the marijuana originated in California and that Tanner was transporting the drugs to the Chicago area.

Tanner was charged with one felony count of possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis.
