Geneva police gear up for active-shooter response exercise

GENEVA, Ill. (AP) – Geneva Police will conduct an “active-shooter” response training at a local school.

The session is scheduled for Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Western Avenue Elementary School.

Officials say the exercise will include sirens and other loud sounds. The school and surrounding area will be closed to the public to ensure the safety of law enforcement officers and neighbors.

Signs will be posted alerting of the exercise and its boundaries.

Geneva police officials say the training is necessary. The FBI reports there were 30 active-shooter incidents in 2017. That’s more than the three-year average of 20 from 2014-2016.

Those interested in hosting a workplace-violence or active-shooter preparedness presentation at a school or office should call the Geneva Police Department.
