Site of long shuttered Aurora hospital may be cleaned up

AURORA, Ill. (AP) – The city of Aurora has moved a step closer to cleaning up the site of the former Copley Hospital.

The Aurora Beacon-News reports the city has started discussing with private developers a plan to clean up the site. The development agreement with Fox Valley Developers LLC would include a $3 million contribution from the city toward the estimated $12 million cost of the cleanup.

The proposal that is expected to be discussed by a City Council committee next week could mean the resolution of a problem that has gone unsolved for years.

After the hospital closed in 1994 after more than a century and moved to what is now Rush-Copley Medical Center, the building deteriorated as one owner after another saw their redevelopment plans fall apart.
