SMITHTON, Ill. (AP) – A southern Illinois school district that began using a trailer six years ago for extra space is hoping voters will approve their request for a school building expansion.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Smithton School District 130 is seeking voter approval in the Nov. 6 election for a $5 million expansion plan. Voters previously rejected the district’s last two proposals to address its increasing student population, which is now at nearly 550 students.
The district hopes to get rid of the trailer and add new classrooms, a gym, first-floor bathrooms, a band room and a stage. The changes would also give school buses space so they don’t block street traffic.
The proposal would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $1,400 over 20 years.
