House expunges Democrat’s threatening remark from record

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – The Illinois House has taken the rare step of erasing from the record comments made during floor debate.

The House voted 110-0 Wednesday to expunge a statement a day earlier by Democratic Rep. Stephanie Kifowit which appeared to threaten the family of Republican Rep. Peter Breen of Lombard.

Breen opposed legislation helping victims of a Legionnaire’s disease crisis at the Quincy veterans’ home. Kifowit said she wanted to pump legionella bacteria-tainted water into the Breen family’s water supply. She later said her comments were mischaracterized.

But Wednesday she asked to retract the comment and said she apologized to Breen. Breen accepted it and called for civility.

The House expunged comments in 2001 when a Democratic lawmaker made a hypothetical reference to a penis enlargement undergone by the House Republican leader.
