Charred 51 Bistro closing, selling building

Charred 51 Bistro in Galesburg will close its doors for good in a few weeks.

Owner and General Manager Elyse Quarterman, in a social media post, says the building has been purchased by a St. Louis area family in hopes of opening an authentic Italian restaurant after the first of the new year.

The building is at 51 N. Prairie and previously housed The Cellar Pizzeria.

Quarterman says the sale wasn’t a planned decision, but she feels it is “the best business decision on what could be a very grim horizon.”

Quarterman says they will be opening for indoor dining until their final closure on Nov. 21.

This would be a violation of Region 2 resurgence mitigations that were handed down by the Illinois Department of Public Health to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Galesburg city leaders say they don’t plan to intervene for any violations, although penalties from the state level could be possible.

Charred 51 will be taking reservations and Quarterman says they appreciate your cooperation in making them when possible.
