The Galesburg Silver Streaks girls basketball team opened the season with a victory Wednesday night on the road defeating the Bloomington Central Catholic Saints, 52-38.
It was a little bit of a sloppy game, especially early on, as the Streaks committed 15 turnovers in the first half — 24 for the game. But, the Streaks otherwise played well — tying the score at seven at the end of the first quarter, jumping out to a 27-20 lead at halftime. The Streaks went on to outscore the Saints in the second half, for the 52-38 win.
Riley Jenkins was our Dave’s Autobody Crunch Time Player of the Game. She led the way with 15 points, including a three-pointer, five 2’s, and was two for four from the free throw line. Jenkins also played well defensively, and also had many rebounds. Lauren Livingston added 12 points, including a couple three-pointers. She was two for two from the line. Audree Peck had eight points for the Streaks. The girls ended up six for 11 from the free throw line, and hit four three-pointers in the game.
Bloomington Central Catholic had 14 turnovers in the game. They had one player in double figures — Katie Steinnan with 14 points. The Saints fall to 1-1, after their win against Metamora on Monday night.
The Streaks will be back at it on Friday night with another non-conference game — this one against Mercer County — and then again Saturday afternoon against Knoxville. Both of those games will be played at the GHS Fieldhouse, and will be heard on WGIL.
NOTE: For the Western Big 6 Conference schedule, girls and boys teams play on the same dates and times. That means starting next week, GHS Girls games will air on 92.7 FM The Laser, while GHS boys games will air on WGIL.
