Illinois law boosts affordable housing construction, rehab

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) – Illinois’ governor has signed into law measures to increase affordable housing and to expand access to a state energy program for low-income residents. Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s action Thursday included creating a grant program to encourage construction and rehabilitation of affordable rental housing in areas hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic. The other law Pritzker signed makes families with young children a priority for the state’s low-income energy assistance program. It also expands access to the so-called LIHEAP energy plan to undocumented residents.
