Bids for work related to some renovations on Carl Sandburg’s main campus in Galesburg were approved Thursday, during the Trustees’ monthly meeting.

The Board of Trustees accepted a general works bid from River City Construction for $232,000 and bids from Mechanical Services Inc. for plumbing, mechanical, and electrical projects, totaling $398,258.

The bids will see the move of the community college’s automotive technology program from its current location in Building B to Building G where it’ll be housed along with the school’s welding, machining, and agriculture programs.

Renovations to Building G are expected to begin in late September and be completed in January.

Plans for the new two-story building remain within budget, according to the college’s architecture firm Farnsworth Group, and it is still expected to open in the fall of 2024.

The new Science and Technology Center will be built where the automotive technology program is currently located. The building will be home to Sandburg’s dental hygiene program, nursing programs, and the Math and Natural Sciences Department.

This will be the first new construction on the main campus since 2006 and the largest project since its initial construction in 1969.
