Abingdon schools briefly locked down during Friday police chase

Knox County Deputies on Friday pulled a man over in Abingdon who gave false identification before driving away leading police on a chase that locked down local schools.

It was 8:13 a.m. in the 500 block of N. Swartz St. when the 32-year-old man drove through a yard before his car came to a stop.

He then fled on foot according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department.

Abingdon High School and Hedding Grade School were both placed on lockdown after police learned the suspect may have been in possession of a weapon.

The suspect later stole a minibike from the 300 block of West North St. and continued to flee before crashing the minibike on Craver St, then running on foot until he was apprehended in the 900 block of Fearing Ave.

No firearm was located and no one was harmed.

The man faces a number of charges including criminal trespassing, possession of a stolen vehicle, burglary, reckless driving, and three Knox County warrants.
