From Classroom to Council: Wendel Hunigan on revitalizing Galesburg

Wendel Hunigan has served most of his adult life dedicated to teaching and helping others, and starting next month, he’ll begin a new chapter in his long resume of public service.

On April 1, Wendel Hunigan defeated 4-term incumbent Wayne Dennis to become Galesburg’s new alderperson in Ward 2. He will be sworn in to office May 5 at the Galesburg City Council meeting.

Hunigan joined WGIL's Jay Redfern and Tyler Gumm to discuss his recent victory and his vision for Galesburg.

The 78-year-old retired sociology instructor said he ran to address Ward 2’s deteriorating conditions, like neglected properties. He aims to be accessible, tackle poverty, homelessness, and de-industrialization citywide, and improve infrastructure. His teaching background shapes his approach, and he’s optimistic about Galesburg’s future.
