Former Galesburg Police Chief Russell Idle has filed a lawsuit against the City of Galesburg, alleging he was denied the chance to retire with benefits after his termination earlier this year.
Filed June 13 in the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court of Knox County, the suit reflects Idle’s claim that the city blocked his retirement plans despite his alleged multiple requests to retire and avoid termination, leaving him with significant financial losses despite receiving some benefits. However, the city maintains Idle will receive his entitled benefits, as noted in a March 26, 2025, “Your Questions Answered” report on wgil.com.
Idle, who served as chief from August 2019 until his firing on March 24, was placed on leave on March 6, following a complaint alleging 11 instances of sexual harassment over two decades. The complaint included incidents dating back to 2005, some before his chief role.
The lawsuit highlights Idle’s reliance on assurances from City Attorney Daniel Alcorn, who allegedly promised Idle he could retire to secure benefits such as two weeks’ salary, up to 480 hours of sick leave, and health insurance. Idle delayed retiring based on this, but allegedly was later told by City Manager Eric Hanson it was “too late” after the investigation.
Hanson previously confirmed to WGIL that Idle would receive no further compensation, other than his pension.
Represented by Peoria law firm Quinn Johnston, Idle seeks more than $50,000 in damages.
Contacted Tuesday, Hanson said the city is unable to comment on the case at this time since it is an ongoing legal matter. WGIL has also reached out to Idle for comment.
Idle began his career in law enforcement with the Galesburg Police Department on Aug. 29, 1994, and worked for GPD for 30 years. He served as a patrol officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and was promoted to captain in February 2018.
According to the city website, Idle’s 2025 annualized salary was $161,815.20. With health benefits, his total compensation package was $185,731.32 — making him the second-highest paid city employee behind the city manager.
