United girls golf team secures second straight sixth at state

The United High School girls golf team finished sixth at the Illinois High School Association Class 1A State Tournament, which wrapped up Saturday at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.

The Red Storm improved their standing on the final day, moving up from eighth place after a strong second-round performance that lowered their team score by 17 strokes.

United entered the second day in eighth but posted a team total of 345 on Saturday, bringing its two-day score to 709. That effort edged it into sixth place, matching the team’s sixth-place finish from the previous year and marking back-to-back top-six finishes at state.

Mt. Carmel won the Class 1A state title with 624, 25 shots better than runner-up Quincy Notre Dame.

Senior Meredith Yung led United, shooting an 82 on Saturday for a two-day total of 159, good for 23rd place individually. Junior Jalyn Wallace followed with an 85 on the final day (two-day 167, 35th place), while sophomore Paige Christianson carded an 84 (two-day 173, 45th place). Junior Abbey Kendall scored 94 on Saturday (two-day 189, 76th place), with freshman Kennedy Martin at 114 (two-day 205, 83rd place) and sophomore Elly Hinton at 115 (two-day 206, 86th place).
