Saturday afternoon in Quincy, it was a battle for 1st place in the Western Big 6 as the Galesburg Silver Streaks girls basketball team and the Quincy Blue Devils both went into the game 9 - 1 in the conference. It was a back-and-forth game in the 1st half with the Streaks taking a one point lead into halftime. But in the 2nd half, Quincy dominated on offensive rebounds and Galesburg's shooting went cold, as the Blue Devils went on to a 45 - 38 win over the Silver Streaks to clinch 1st place in the Western Big 6 standings.
The Streaks were led in scoring by sophomore Zaniyah Carter with a game-high 18 points and was named the Dave's Auto Body Crunch Time Player of the Game. She also finished with 4 rebounds, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. Taylor Herchenroder and Eleanor Johnson both scored 6 points, and Jozalyn Kilgore and Lily Furrow both finished with 4 points.
Both Galesburg and Quincy shot about 35% from the field, but the difference for the Blue Devils was a couple more made three-point shots and 3 made free throws to none by the Streaks. Overall, Galesburg shot 17 of 48 from the field, 4 of 15 from three-point range, and 0 of 2 from the free throw line. They pulled down 32 rebounds, had 7 assists, and committed 20 turnovers to only 13 by the Blue Devils.
The Galesburg girls are now 22 - 3 on the season and 9 - 2 in the Western Big 6.
