Host Chris Postin talks with Kate Johnson, manager of women's services and digital care for OSF OnCall, and Amy Mefford, lead advanced practice nurse for OSF OnCall obstetrics, about a mobile unit launched last summer to support pregnant and postpartum women in Galesburg and nearby counties. The program, backed by a $1.5 million grant from Meridian Health Plan, targets Medicaid-enrolled patients facing transportation and access challenges in maternity care deserts.
The unit functions as a full OB/GYN office on wheels, offering point-of-care ultrasounds, lab testing, and exams at homes or community spots like the Galesburg library. Integrated digital tools provide 24/7 chat support, remote blood pressure monitoring, and lactation assistance, while navigators address social needs such as housing and food. Johnson and Mefford highlight how the service aims to reduce risks in areas where women travel 40 to 60 miles for care.
They also cover innovative training at the Jump Simulation Center and AI-enhanced hospital monitoring at places like St. Mary Medical Center, which detects early signs of distress.
