A 7th grader from Alexis got an up-close look at state government Wednesday when he spent the day on the floor of the Illinois House of Representatives in Springfield.
Colum Morgan, a student at United Junior High School, served as a Page for a Day in the Illinois House as the guest of State Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha).
“Colum is a bright student with a bright future,” Swanson said. “And it was great to have him join us on the House floor today to see the House of Representatives in action.”
Colum is the son of Levi Morgan of Alexis and Jessa Morgan of Galesburg. Outside the classroom, he keeps a busy schedule — he plays drums in a band, competes as a mid-distance runner on the track team, and volunteers at a local Rotary Club food bank. He has also volunteered at both Carl Sandburg College and Knox College, including serving as Blaze, the Knox College mascot, and has helped with Experience Galesburg, the local tourism office.
Colum has participated in both the Shamroxville Parade in Knoxville and the Galesburg Holly Days parade. He has visited 26 states and two Canadian provinces and hopes to travel to Ireland or Germany. He is also currently working with his father to restore a historic opera house in Alexis.
