In this episode of Galesburg's Morning News, we sit down with Justin Thomas of J & M Displays to discuss Galesburg’s Big Bang BOOM!, the area’s largest 4th of July fireworks display, set for Friday, July 4, at Lake Storey Park. This free community event, presented by WGIL, the Galesburg Lions Club, and the City of Galesburg, with support from Blick Art Materials, Nissan of Galesburg, Smurfit Westrock, and Roto Rooter, features a 30-minute fireworks show synchronized to music.
Justin, a 25-year veteran of fireworks displays, shares how his eight-person crew sets up the show, starting July 3 with rack assembly and wiring on July 4. He highlights the unique lakeside setting, which enhances visuals with reflections, and the digital firing system that ensures precise choreography. We also learn about the impact of tariffs on fireworks sourced globally (90% from China), and new special effects planned for this year.
