Discovery Depot’s Purses to Inspire: Purses, fun and community support

In a recent Galesburg In Focus interview, Denise Gerstenberger, executive director of Discovery Depot Children's Museum in Galesburg, previewed the museum’s 6th annual Purses to Inspire fundraiser, set for Thursday, Aug. 28 at the museum. This critical fundraiser kicks off the museum’s fundraising season, supporting its operations and mission to provide engaging programs and high-impact traveling exhibits for local children and visitors.

The Purses to Inspire auction features a record-breaking 100 brand-new, donated purses from sought-after brands like Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Fossil, and more, including unique items like Disney backpacks and pickleball bags. Bidding is conducted online via the “32 Auctions Purses to Inspire” link on discoverydepot.org, opening Tuesday afternoon and closing at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Participants can create an account to receive outbid notifications, with starting bids ranging from $35 to $65. The in-person event, described as a “ladies night out,” starts at 4 p.m. with vendors like Fashion Farm Boutique and Mary Kay, plus food, drinks, and cocktails. Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Gerstenberger highlighted the event as a great opportunity for Christmas shopping, with the Dooney & Bourke satchel expected to be a hot item.
