Galesburg Athletics 2025-26: New faces and improved facilities

On Galesburg’s Morning News, Nick Young, in his second year as Galesburg District 205 Director of Athletics, and Aaron Furrow, President of the Galesburg Athletic Booster Club, preview the 2025-26 Silver Streaks athletic season. The season begins with girls golf on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Rock Island, followed by "Meet the Streaks" events: volleyball and soccer on Thursday, Aug. 21, and a major event on Friday, Aug. 22 featuring senior autographs, football scrimmages, and a varsity scrimmage against Monmouth-Roseville.

Booster Club Initiatives: Furrow pushes a membership drive to grow from 75 members, offering tiers ($25 Fan, $50 Silver, $100 Gold) with t-shirts, plus program ads and a Nov. 1 "Draw Down" fundraiser at Cedar Creek Hall, where 150 tickets could split $4,500. The club has funded $30,000 for Wicall upgrades and supports events like senior night.

New Coaches: Taylor Thiel joins as boys basketball coach, and Andrea Sampson, a GHS softball alum, takes over softball, with Young fostering a collaborative “athletic department mentality.”

Facility Upgrades: Artificial turf replaces natural fields at baseball and softball , Wicall’s new addition includes restrooms and a wrestling room, and a multi-purpose room with batting cages nears completion by winter.
