Great Galesburg Balloon Race – A Sky Full of Color

On this episode of Galesburg’s Morning News, we talk to Greg Saul, organizer and seasoned balloon pilot of the Great Galesburg Balloon Race. Held Friday through Sunday, July 25-27 at Lake Storey Park, this 25th anniversary event promises a vibrant hot air balloon festival with family fun.

Here are the highlights:

  • Family-Friendly Festivities: Starting around 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, enjoy kids’ activities like train rides, bounce houses, “Touch a Truck,” face painting, and live music by Southern Exposure, plus food vendors all weekend.
  • Hot Air Balloons: Expect 25 balloons, including the special “Boo” ghost balloon (85 feet tall, 105,000 cubic feet) with LED lights for the night glow, a crowd favorite at dusk.
  • Event Logistics: Parking is near ball diamonds, with limited spots by the pavilion and handicap access on the field; festivities kick off around 4-5 p.m., weather permitting.
  • Merchandise and Fundraising: T-shirts, cooling towels, and raffle tickets (golf ball drop, family fun pack) support the event, with all proceeds benefiting the race.
