The 2024-25 school year is winding down, but Galesburg District 205 is buzzing with activity—from construction projects to strategic planning. Joining us on Galesburg’s Morning News was Superintendent Dr. John Asplund where he discussed:
- Updates were provided on Northside Construction Projects at Galesburg Junior Senior High School, including the warehouse nearing completion, the massive Wicall Gym addition on schedule for Nov. 1, and ongoing upgrades to the baseball and softball fields.
- The Impact of Facility Improvements was highlighted, noting improved learning conditions for students, better working environments for staff (especially with climate control), and assistance in attracting new teachers.
- Registration for the 2025-26 School Year was discussed, with the district seeing significantly improved timely registration numbers this year thanks to incentives and plans to release held spots for late registrants.
- The process for Onboarding and Training of New School Board Members, specifically Luan Statham and Jamie Harter, involves tailored training on finances, laws, governance, and a planned June retreat.
- Progress on the Strategic Planning Process, launched in 2023, includes increased intentionality in community outreach, a strong focus on K-12 writing instruction, signs of academic improvement post-pandemic, and a planned district magazine in August.
- Efforts regarding Teacher Retention and Morale include surveying staff, competitive pay, expressing appreciation, leveraging financial security, and improving the working environment based on feedback.
