Knox College Jazz Residency: Shadowlands Takes the Stage

On this episode of Galesburg’s Morning News, Andy Crawford, Managing Director of the Music Performance Program at Knox College, joins John Raymond and Sean Carey—co-leaders of the band Shadowlands—to preview the 13th Annual Jerome Mirza Jazz Residency. Funded by the Jerome Mirza Foundation, the week-long program brings world-class artists to campus and the Galesburg community for workshops, rehearsals, and performances that push the boundaries of jazz.

This year’s artists-in-residence are Grammy-nominated trumpeter John Raymond and multi-Grammy winner Sean Carey (S. Carey of Bon Iver). Their collaborative project Shadowlands blends indie folk, forward-thinking jazz, lush pop, and electronic textures with plenty of improvisation. Crawford tailors the residency each year to the artists’ passions, creating unique experiences for Knox students and the public.

Activities continue through Friday, with a casual Knox College Jazz Night tonight (Thursday, Jan. 22) at Smokin’ Willies BBQ (7-10 p.m.), and the finale: a concert tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 23) at the historic Orpheum Theatre (7 p.m., doors 6 p.m.). The Knox Jazz Ensemble opens with tunes featuring Raymond, followed by a full Shadowlands set. All events are free and open to the public.
