Remembering Ryne Sandberg with teammate Jim Sundberg

In this Galesburg’s Morning News interview, WGIL host Jay Redfern is joined by Galesburg native and Major League All-Star Jim Sundberg to honor the late Ryne Sandberg, the Chicago Cubs legend and Hall of Famer who passed away on July 28, 2025, after battling metastatic prostate cancer. Sundberg, a six-time Gold Glove winner, three-time All-Star, and 1985 World Series champion with the Kansas City Royals, shares memories of playing alongside Sandberg during the 1987 and part of 1988 seasons with the Cubs.

He reflects on Sandberg’s exceptional skills as a second baseman, describing his consistency, defensive prowess, and offensive power, including his ability to hit for average and steal bases. Sundberg ranks Sandberg as the best second baseman he played with, highlighting his quiet leadership and fun-loving personality, including pranks with teammate Rick Sutcliffe.

The discussion also touches on the importance of remembering baseball icons like Sandberg, and recent Hall of Fame inductees Dave Parker, and Dick Allen, emphasizing their lasting impact on the game.
