Scott Swiler, Hospice Care Consultant for Beacon of Hope Hospice, joins Chris Postin on Galesburg In Focus to discuss one of the most misunderstood parts of healthcare: hospice care. For many families, the word "hospice" feels heavy, final, and scary. But modern hospice is a comprehensive support system designed to extend quality of life—not a last resort when all hope is gone.

Swiler addresses common misconceptions, including the myth that hospice is only for the final two weeks of life. In reality, Medicare allows hospice services for those with a prognosis of six months or less, and eligibility can be extended based on medical re-evaluations. Hospice isn't about "giving up"—it's about managing symptoms, providing compassion, and allowing families to transition from being task-oriented caregivers back to being family members.

One of the most overlooked aspects? Hospice is provided at no cost to families covered by Medicare or Medicaid. All medications, medical equipment, and personal care supplies are covered 100%. A multidisciplinary team—nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers—supports both the patient and the family.

Swiler encourages families to have conversations about hospice before they're in crisis mode. By understanding options early, families can create a care plan that extends quality of life and provides relief for caregivers.
