In this episode of Galesburg's Morning News, Chris Stokes, a Stearman owner/pilot from Lincoln, Nebraska, and a United Airlines commercial pilot, shared his passion for Stearman biplanes and his experiences at the 54th Annual National Stearman Fly-In (Sept. 1-6, 2025) at Harrel W. Timmons Galesburg Regional Airport. Stokes discussed his 1942 Stearman’s history, the thrill and challenges of flying it, how it compares to modern aircraft, and why the Fly-In is a must-see for Galesburg locals, emphasizing the event’s unique community and aviation spirit.
According to Stokes, the Fly-In, drawing about 80 Stearmans and 200 volunteers, is a unique global event, an “absolute gift” to Galesburg that won’t last forever due to aging planes and pilots. He urged locals to visit, especially on Community Day (Sept. 6), for free admission, $1 tram rides, and the Dawn Patrol Flight Breakfast ($10 adults, $7 children under 12), where pilots eagerly share their aircraft stories.
