For Stroke Awareness Month, Galesburg In Focus spoke with Janet Wehrly, RN/Cardiac Rehab, and Shelly Heimann, Physical Therapist, from OSF HealthCare St. Mary Medical Center. They highlighted key information about stroke and resources available locally.
A major focus was the "Go-Getters" stroke support group, open and free for stroke survivors and their caregivers at any stage of recovery. The group provides connection, encouragement, and shared experiences. They meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the St. Mary's rehab conference room. Caregivers are encouraged to attend even if the survivor cannot initially.
The interview also covered crucial stroke information. A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Untreated high blood pressure is the biggest risk factor. Recognizing the warning signs using the acronym B.E. F.A.S.T. (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, Time) is critical, emphasizing the need for immediate emergency treatment.
Recovery varies, and survivors often face emotional challenges like depression and isolation. Caregivers also experience significant burdens and the need to avoid burnout. The support group helps address these challenges. It was noted that about 80% of strokes are preventable by managing risk factors like blood pressure, diet, exercise, and smoking. TIAs or "mini-strokes" are important warning signs.
