The Hickey Heritage: A generational connection with the Silver Streaks

We always hear the phrase, “like father, like son,” and that certainly holds true for Mick and Shawn Hickey.

For the last 55 years and counting, someone from the Hickey family has either taught, coached, or played sports at Galesburg High School.

Mick Hickey started teaching and coaching at GHS in 1969, capping his hall of fame career in 2007. He’s watched three children — Christy, Trisha and Shawn — play sports for the Silver Streaks, and currently serves the roles of father/grandfather/biggest fan and cheerleader for not one, not two, not but THREE Hickeys in the Galesburg football program.

Mick’s son Shawn is a longtime teacher and coach who’s in his first year at the helm of the Silver Streaks. And Shawn’s two youngest sons Drew and Grady are both players for Galesburg, following in the footsteps of their older brother Riley.

Mick and Shawn join WGIL's Jay Redfern to talk a little about the father and son dynamic.
