DESCRIPTION:Sally Weisenburg and Don Berbaum will bring jazz and blues to the Carl Sandburg Songbag Concert on Sunday\, February 18 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Carl Sandburg 8State Historic Site in Galesburg. This concert originally scheduled for Feb. 11 was postponed due to the weather. \nA team both personally and musically since the mid-1970s\, Weisenburg and Berbaum perform music from many categories in addition to jazz and blues. The music they select has more to do with quality than the category. Sally’s vocals are always the focal point of their performances. Don’s playing on the guitar and harmonica provide inspirational coloring for her vocals. Sally also plays the keyboard. Their Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/events/302635006858750\, and Sally’s website is http://www.sallyweisenburg.com. \nThe performance by Sally Weisenburg and Don Berbaum will be in the Sandburg site’s Barn at 313 E. Third Street in Galesburg. The show starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. with a break for refreshments around 5 p.m. A donation of $5 per person is suggested. The concert is sponsored by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. \nJoe and Vicki Price will perform at the March 11 Songbag Concert. The April 8 concert will feature Small Potatoes\, and on May 13 John Heasly and Jerry will perform. \nCarl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America’s folk songs. The series is named in honor of Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag\,” published in 1927. The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site includes the home where the famed poet and biographer was born. Noted lawyer Henry Drummond and Populist and Evangelist Matthew Harrison Brady descend on a small southern town to argue the case of creationism versus evolution. \nReligion\, science\, and politics—and the struggles that exist within and between them—is at the heart of Inherit The Wind\, the story of a nation and its people as they struggle to come to grips with the forces of change. \nThere are seven lead parts in the production (six males\, ages 25-70\, and one female\, age 25-35) as well as a wide variety of supporting roles for actors of middle school age and older to play townspeople and jurors. \n“For anyone who has wanted to be in a production but has never been on stage\, or for those who don’t want to commit to a large role\, there are many opportunities to be involved in Inherit the Wind\,” said Director John Siebken. “No previous acting experience is required.” \nFor auditions\, actors will be asked to do readings of various scenes from the script in various combinations of characters. \nPerformances of Inherit the Wind will be at Prairie Players Civic Theatre April 6-8 and 13-15. \nIf you are unable to make the scheduled auditions on February 19 and 20\, call Prairie Players Civic Theatre at 309-343-7720 or email info@prairieplayers.com prior to February 16 to make other arrangements.

Tickets are $10 for adults\, $5 for senior citizens and Knox College alumni\, free to all students with school ID\, and free to Knox College students\, faculty\, and staff. Tickets are available at the door one hour before each performance or by advanced reservation at 309-341-7472. \nThe three plays\, written in the late 1920s and early 1930s\, are performed by an ensemble cast and directed by Neil Blackadder\, professor of theatre. The plays are “He who says Yes\,” “He who says No\,” and “The Exception and the Rule.” \n“Brecht intended these plays as experimental\, and we’ve been experimenting with how to employ and enjoy Brecht’s devices\, especially the relationship between the actor and the character the actor is playing\,” Blackadder said. \n“We have also focused on how the show is created by the eight actors in the ensemble. The play includes live music and songs composed by one of the students on the production team\,” Blackadder said. “All of that collaboration is very much in the spirit of Brecht.” \n“Two plays — ‘He who says Yes’ and ‘He who says No’ — are about why we agree\, or don’t agree\, to go along with what someone else is dictating to us\, through laws and customs\,” Blackadder said. “The plays are about how you weigh the interests of the individual against the interests of the group.” \n“‘The Exception and the Rule’ asks whether our actions should be guided by the rule\, or whether we will remain open to exceptions to the rule\,” Blackadder said.

She is donating her voice to raise money for the projects of local service club Galesburg Altrusa. \n“We are so excited to offer this evening to the public\,” said Carol Brown\, event coordinator. Semenya’s accolades include Outstanding Vocalist from the Boston Music Awards\, Knox College Achievement Award\, and inductee of Boston’s Jazz Hall of Fame. McCord will be accompanied by Galesburg’s own Daniel Leahy\, an accomplished pianist\, vocalist\, arranger\, and producer. \nMcCord is a member of the Altrusa Club\, which annually contributes to the community through scholarships\, food drives and community dinners\, holiday cheer for nursing home residents\, and other activities. They sponsor and stock Racks on the Rails\, a reading project for those who travel Amtrak through Galesburg\, and contribute cash or labor to Safe Harbor\, La Grace Hall of Hope\, Habitat for Humanity\, Baby Talk\, Knox Prairie Community Kitchen\, Adopt a Highway\, and the Child Advocacy Center. A clause in their constitution ensures that all money raised by the club goes directly back to the community. \nIn addition to the music\, attendees can munch on hors d’oeuvres or enjoy a cash bar. \nAltrusa members are also providing themed baskets for silent auction. The baskets reflect the members’ varied interests and strengths: tea\, fitness\, homemade soap\, martinis\, legal services\, and cupcakes\, to name a few.\nTickets are $15 and are available from any Altrusa member or at the door.\nOnly cash or checks can be accepted at the event.
