SUMMARY:Tax Assistance from Monmouth College
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Monday\, Feb. 4\, Monmouth College’s free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will once again be available to area residents. \nThrough April 15\, Monmouth accounting students and faculty will be available in the College’s Center for Science and Business to help local community members file their 2018 tax returns. \nKnown as VITA\, the free service – which assists taxpayers in filing state and federal individual income tax returns – is provided in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service. Accounting professor Judy Peterson\, coordinator of Monmouth’s program\, said VITA has a two-fold purpose: service and education for the community\, and citizenship and education for the students. \nSessions will be held on most Mondays\, Wednesdays and Saturdays between Feb. 4-April 15. VITA will not be available during the College’s spring break: March 2\, 4\, 6 and 9. \nSaturday sessions are scheduled from 9 a.m.-noon and from 1-4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday sessions will be held from 4-7 p.m. \nLocated in the 700 block of East Broadway\, the Center for Science and Business is handicapped accessible. Taxpayers should use the building’s main south entrance\, and signs will guide them to the correct interview room. \nOn evenings and weekends\, parking is available in the Center for Science and Business lot and along Broadway. Before 5 p.m. on weekdays\, taxpayers are asked to park on Broadway. \nTo be eligible to participate in the program\, taxpayers may have a maximum annual income of up to $63\,000 for single filers and up to $101\,000 for joint filers. \n“We will let you know if your tax return items are within the parameters of the VITA program\,” said Peterson\, who has overseen VITA since it started at Monmouth in 2000. “VITA does not prepare complicated returns.” \nRefunds that have the earned income tax credit will not be processed by the IRS until mid-February\, at the earliest\, said Peterson. \n“Taxpayers who fall into that category should wait a few weeks before coming to a VITA session\,” she said. “In general\, waiting times are much shorter for the taxpayers who come later in the season\, so that’s something to also keep in mind.” \nPeterson is assisted in her direction of the program by accounting department colleague Connie Mersch. \nQuestions\, including what to bring to a VITA session\, can be answered by visiting monmouthcollege.edu/vita. Questions can also be emailed to vita@monmouthcollege.edu.

SUMMARY:Great Decisions: Nuclear Negotiations
DESCRIPTION:Can “the art of the deal” apply to stabilizing our nuclear future? \nThat will be one of the questions posed Feb. 6 as the Great Decisions program at Monmouth College tackles the issue of nuclear negotiations. \nPolitical science lecturer Jessica Vivian will lead the discussion at 7:30 p.m. in Room 276 of the College’s Center for Science and Business. \nThe Trump administration has brought a new urgency\, if not a new approach\, to dealing with nuclear weapons. The President has met with Vladimir Putin as the New Start Treaty with Russia comes up for renewal in 2021\, the first presidential summit ever with Kim Jong-un was held to discuss denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula\, and President Trump has decertified the Obama nuclear deal with Iran. \nVivian and the Great Decisions group will discuss several issues related to the topic\, including to what degree past nuclear talks should guide future U.S. nuclear arms control negotiations. \nCalled “America’s largest discussion program on world affairs\,” Great Decisions is a nationwide program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association\, a non-partisan\, non-governmental association that works to increase Americans’ understanding of foreign policy issues.

SUMMARY:Illinois Supreme Court Justice to Speak on Innovation in Judicial System
DESCRIPTION:Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas L. Kilbride will speak on the history and innovation in the Illinois judicial system on Wednesday\, February 13\, at 4 p.m. in the Trustees Room on the third floor of Alumni Hall. The event is free and open to the public. \nKilbride’s talk will focus on the selection of state Supreme Court justices and judicial innovations that have occurred in Illinois since he was elected to the court in 2000. Two of those innovations include the introduction of cameras into Illinois courtrooms and the citation of online opinions\, two initiatives that occurred during his term as Chief Justice from 2010 to 2013. \nThese innovations can be viewed as a continuation of the traveling Bicentennial of Illinois Law Exhibit\, which is on display in the Bayer Study Area on the third floor of Alumni Hall through February 18. The exhibit showcases the contributions of the legal community to the history of Illinois. \nKilbride received his law degree from Antioch School of Law in Washington\, D.C.\, and practiced law for 20 years in Rock Island as a legal services attorney\, then in civil and criminal practice. He was elected to the Supreme Court of Illinois for the Third Judicial District in 2000 and was retained for a subsequent 10-year term in 2010. He was elected to a three-year term as Chief Justice by his colleagues on the Supreme Court in 2010. \nDuring Justice Kilbride’s tenure as Chief\, the Supreme Court approved several initiatives\, including: enhancing the use of technology in all Illinois courts by encouraging electronic filing and other digital means of conducting court business; establishing a pilot project allowing cameras in Illinois trial courtrooms; and creating the Commission on Access to Justice to make it easier for all parties\, including the poor and those with limited English proficiency\, to navigate the Illinois court system. \nKilbride’s talk and the Bicentennial of Illinois Law Exhibit are sponsored by the Illinois Supreme Court Historical Preservation Commission to commemorate 200 years of the Illinois judicial branch.

SUMMARY:Great Decisions discussion on Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Monmouth College anthropology professor Petra Kuppinger will take a closer look at the volatile Middle East when she leads a Great Decisions discussion at Monmouth College on Feb. 13. \nKuppinger will introduce the topic at 7:30 p.m. in Room 276 of the College’s Center for Science and Business. \nThe administration of President Donald Trump has aligned itself with strongmen in Saudi Arabia\, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt\, which along with Israel have a common goal of frustrating Iranian expansion. \nKuppinger and the Great Decisions group will attempt to answer such questions as: What will be the fallout from policy reversals such as withdrawing from the Iranian nuclear accord and moving the United States embassy in Israel to Jerusalem? Does the U.S. see a path forward in troubled states such as Syria\, Yemen\, Libya and Iraq? Is the U.S. headed toward war with Iran? \nCalled “America’s largest discussion program on world affairs\,” Great Decisions is a nationwide program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association\, a non-partisan\, non-governmental association that works to increase Americans’ understanding of foreign policy issues.
