SUMMARY:Songbag Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:The Roundstone Buskers and their modern take on Celtic music return Sunday\, October 14 to the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site’s Songbag Concert Series in Galesburg.  The group\, which formed in 2001\, takes its name from Roundstone\, Ireland\, home of the great bodhran maker\, Malachy Kearns.  The trio’s current lineup features Shannan Sullivan\, Tom Jones and Bruce Burton. \nWith Jones’ and Burton’s rock and bluegrass backgrounds\, plus Sullivan’s classical training\, the Buskers’ style is eclectic and exciting.  They put folky spins on everything from Louis Prima to Paul Simon to modern pop\, as well as adding in their own distinct arrangements of traditional Celtic jigs and reels. “You draw from that past\,” Jones explains. “It’s exciting when you do that kind of music that’s been done for thousands of years by your forefathers\, and then you bring it back into modern times and people still want to hear it.” \nThe Roundstone Buskers have been praised for putting a modern spin on traditional music and bringing some traditional sounds to modern music. Critics rave that they “routinely get people up clapping\, yelling\, singing and dancing” and “keep the musical traditions of their ancestral homeland alive.”   For more about their music\, visit www.roundstonebuskers.net.  \nThe performance on October 14 will be in the Sandburg site’s Barn at 313 E. Third Street in Galesburg. The show starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. with a break for refreshments around 5 p.m.  The second set will begin around 5:20 p.m.  A donation of $5 per person is suggested.  The concert is sponsored by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).   \nNovember 11 will be the final Fall Songbag Concert.  Tom Irwin\, a folk musician from Springfield\, Illinois\, will be performing for the first time at the Sandburg site.  \nCarl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America’s folk songs. The concert series is named in honor of Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag\,” published in 1927. SUMMARY:Lake Storey Clean-Up
DESCRIPTION:The City of Galesburg Park Division\, with assistance from Knox College\, will host the 14th annual Lake Storey fall clean-up day on Saturday\, October 20\, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  \nVolunteers are encouraged to gather anytime between 8:00 a.m. and noon at the East Boat Ramp\, which is located on the east side of the Lake and accessed by taking Gatewood Lane off of North Henderson Street. City staff will be there to handout trash bags and provide direction. Hot chocolate\, water\, and doughnuts will be provided. The water level will be low as the lake is currently being lowered. Volunteers will help clean along the shoreline and possibly walk through some of the wooded trails. Volunteers should dress appropriately for outdoor work\, including work gloves\, if they have them. \nLake Storey Park is a 411 acre community recreational facility on the north side of Galesburg\, and includes playgrounds\, ball fields\, beach\, campground\, multipurpose trails\, and the 130 acre lake known for its excellent fishing and boating opportunities. This is an outstanding opportunity for nature enthusiasts\, Boy Scouts\, Girl Scouts\, and other community service organizations to help preserve and enhance one of the area’s most beautiful natural treasures.

DESCRIPTION:This is the 40th annual Galva Beta Sigma Phi juried craft show with over 100 craftspeople from the midwest displaying handicrafts both inside and outside of the high school. Items include seasonal decorations\, candles\, wooden items\, jewelry\, toys\, dolls\, florals\, sweatshirts\, garden art\, baskets\, ceramics\, pet supplies and apples\, pumpkins\, gourds\, squash\, mums and kettlecorn. \nFood will be served in the cafeteria featuring the famous Beta Sigma Phi homemade BBQ sandwiches\, ham sandwiches\, and many tempting fancy desserts and pies. \nProceeds are used for community service projects of both the Xi Kappa Gamma and Lambda Nu chapters of the sorority. \nThere is a $2 admission charge and no strollers or pets will be allowed.
