SUMMARY:Galesburg Community Chorus Presents American Masterworks Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Galesburg Community Chorus will present its spring concert\, entitled American Masterworks\, on Saturday\, May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Tickets are $12 for adults\, $10 for seniors\, and free for all students\, and they may be purchased in advance at Innkeeper’s Coffee or at the door prior to the concert. \n  \nThe concert will feature Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and John Corigliano’s Fern Hill\, both for chorus and orchestra. Lauridsen and Corigliano are widely regarded as two of the finest living composers of classical music in the United States. \n  \nChorus director Tim Pahel says “these works are gorgeous\, with lush harmonies and beautiful melodies. The singers and I have really loved working on this music and are excited for audience members to hear it.” \nThe concert is sponsored by Innkeeper’s Coffee and supported by grants from the City of Galesburg\, the Galesburg Community Foundation\, and the Illinois Arts Council\, a state agency. \n  \nThe Galesburg Community Chorus\, directed by Dr. Tim Pahel\, is the oldest community music organization in the Galesburg area and is currently celebrating its 71st anniversary. It was founded in 1945 at Knox College\, and the chorus retains its affiliation with the college\, which provides rehearsal facilities.

SUMMARY:Western Illinois Wind Band Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Western Illinois Wind Band will perform their final concert of the season on May 10\, 2016 at 7 pm at the Avon Grade School MultiPurpose Room. Directed by Bernie Potter\, this Adult Concert Band will be paying tribute to some former music educators from Fulton County\, John Thompson from Canton and Harold Ray from Avon. These educators made a lasting impression on music students in the area for many years\, including many current members of the Western Illinois Wind Band. The music selections for this program have been taken from programs played by the Canton and Avon Bands during the late 50’s and early 60’s. Many of the Harold Ray selections are taken from the record made from the Spring Concert of 1963. \nSeveral members of the Wind Band will be guest conducting numbers on the performance including Fred Herink\, Farmington Band Director\, directing Hall of Fame March\, Kylie Hankosky. Brimfield Band Director\, directing Variation Overture\, and Deanna Chatterton\, directing Thundercrest March. Local vocalists will be performing God of Our Fathers with the Band\, and there will be some opportunities for audience participation. This program has a wide spectrum of styles and familiar works. It is one of 38 “Common Heritage” public history projects supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities now underway throughout the nation.
