SUMMARY:Julie McVey Reading Day - Step Up Challenge
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Julie’s Little Libraries\, we have created Julie McVey Reading Day\, which will include a virtual walk/run\, a live children’s walk/run\, and a morning reading festival. The first Julie McVey Reading Day will be held on Saturday\, July 27\, 2019 at Monmouth’s Public Square. \nTo join us in our efforts to raise funds in Julie’s honor\, please consider signing up now for our virtual fundraising challenge! The process is easy and the virtual race is designed specifically to fit into your schedule! \nYou have three months to complete seven miles of physical activity and log it. Walk on the treadmill or step machine\, swim\, ride your bike…whatever works for you! iPhone/Apple owners can use their iPhone\, Apple Watch\, or Fitbit to track their miles; those with Google or Android devices can use GoogleFit or Fitbit. If you are not comfortable tracking miles that way\, simply track them yourself and let us know when you are done! \nIf you are unable to participate in the virtual race\, you can still support this campaign by making a monetary donation (simply click on the “donate” tab at the top of the page and follow the prompts). Thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping us celebrate a life so well lived. \nThis is a community event\, in cooperation with Warren County Libraries\, Monmouth College’s Education Department\, Monmouth College’s Classes 03’-06’\, United School District\, Monmouth-Roseville School District\, Buchanan Center for the Arts\, West Central Leadership\, The City of Monmouth\, Warren County Eagle Scouts\, and the Ronald and Cassandra Shawler Memorial Library.

SUMMARY:Sandburg Songbag Concert Series
DESCRIPTION:Mark and Molly Mathewson\, the father and daughter duo that performs as Last Acre\, will take the stage on Sunday\, June 9 at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg as part of the Sandburg Songbag Concert Series. \nLast Acre’s sound is rooted in traditional Appalachian folk music. They excel at bluegrass\, combined with Midwestern prairie songwriting sensibilities. Their blood-kin harmonies are exceptional\, and they have a dry tongue-in-cheek repartee. Mark performed at the Sandburg site last November during the recording of one of the Illinois Humanities Bicentennial podcasts. His songs have been recorded by a number of bluegrass acts\, including 2017 Grammy nominee Blue Highway\, the Lonesome River Band\, Ernie Thacker\, Kenny Smith\, and Josh Williams. For additional information\, check their website at https://www.lastacremusic.com/ \nThe June 9 Songbag performance by Last Acre will be in the Sandburg site’s Barn at 313 E. Third Street in Galesburg. The show starts at 4:00 p.m. and ends at 6:00 p.m. with a break for refreshments around 5:00 p.m. A donation of $5 per person is suggested. The 2019 Sandburg Songbag concerts are made possible thanks to a grant from the Mark and Celia Godsil Family Fund\, a Donor Advised Fund of the Galesburg Community Foundation\, and the Community Impact Fund at the Galesburg Community Foundation. The concert is presented by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. \nCarl Sandburg Songbag concerts for the remainder of 2019 include: \nJuly 14: David Berntson\, blues harmonica\nAugust 11: Andy Crawford and Harry Tonchev\, jazz guitar and bass\nSept. 8: Barry Cloyd\, singer\, songwriter\nOct. 13: Sally Weisenburg and Don Bernbaum\, blues and jazz\nNov. 10: Jera Faraipanahi Scott and Carol Jean Trulson\, acoustic guitar and keyboard \nCarl Sandburg was a collector and performer of America’s folk songs. The series is named in honor of Sandburg’s book “The American Songbag\,” published in 1927. The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site includes the home where the famed poet and biographer was born. For more information\, visit www.sandburg.org. \nThe Sandburg site is operated by the Illinois Department Natural Resources.

SUMMARY:Duo Scandinavica comes to Bishop Hill
DESCRIPTION:Duo Scandinavica’s Jim Nelson and Lori Ann Reinhall will present a concert entitled “Unto the New World” on June 19 at 7 pm. The concert will take place in the Bishop Hill Colony School and include Swedish and Norwegian folk music\, Scandinavian Vaudeville hits\, and popular Scandinavian music. This wide variety of Scandinavian musical history spans from 1850– 1980. \nDuo Scandinavica’s repertory covers the breadth of the Scandinavian-American musical tradition. Its creators\, Jim Nelson and Lori Ann Reinhall\, both have roots in the Scandinavian immigration. They have strong ties to musical communities in Scandinavia and North America. With the goal of preserving a pivotal selection of the Nordic musical treasure chest on both sides of the Atlantic\, Duo Scandinavica has performed in Seattle\, Tacoma\, Chicago and Indianapolis in the US\, and in Sweden\, Norway and Iceland. Their CD “Emigrant” features 18 of these songs. \nJim Nelson grew up with his Norwegian-speaking father and family in the Midwest. He studied at Augustana College and the University of Wisconsin\, and has a Ph.D in Scandinavian Studies from the University of Washington. He played accordion for Scandinavian “old-time” dances in Illinois and Wisconsin\, and has sung and played in Edmonton and Viking\, Alberta; Regina and Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan; and San Francisco and Seattle in the US. Jim was Assistant Professor of Scandinavian Studies at colleges in Alberta and Minnesota. He has also taught at the University of Oslo\, Norway\, and the University of Washington in Seattle. He taught public school music in Norway for 15 years. Jim is a member of Svea Lodge 253\, Vasa Order of America. \nLori Ann Reinhall was born and raised in Seattle. Her grandparents came from Blekinge\, Sweden. She studied Scandinavian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington. There she and Jim began their musical collaboration. Lori Ann sang and played piano in Sweden\, taught school in and near Vienna\, Austria for 3 years and continued her music studies at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee. She was worked in software production for Microsoft and is currently assistant editor of the newspaper “The Norwegian-American” in Seattle. \nThe Bishop Hill Colony School is located at 304 Bishop Hill St.\, Bishop Hill\, IL.
