SUMMARY:Auditions for "Brighton Beach Memoirs"
DESCRIPTION:Prairie Players Civic Theatre announces auditions for their next production\, Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs\, on Monday and Tuesday\, November 26 and 27\, at 6:30 p.m. at Prairie Players Civic Theatre\, 160 South Seminary Street\, Galesburg. \nThe play is a semi-autobiographical comedy that follows 14-year-old Eugene Jerome\, the narrator and central character\, who lives with his family in a crowded\, lower middle-class Brooklyn walk-up in 1937. \nDreaming of baseball and girls\, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life: formidable mother\, overworked father\, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche\, her two young (but rapidly developing) daughters\, and you have a recipe for hilarity\, served up Simon-style. \nThis bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling household where\, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem\, you wouldn’t be living here.” \nThe cast includes three males and four females: \n\nEugene Jerome (younger son) He has recently discovered girls in a big way and wants to be a baseball player\, but will settle for being a writer.\nStanley Jerome (older son) He is the older brother of Eugene who must work a factory job to help support the family.\nJack Jerome (father) Father of the Jerome family who feels the pressure of supporting an extended family by working two jobs.\nKate Jerome (mother) The very strong mother who attempts to hold the family together.\nAunt Blanche (mother) Kate’s younger sister\, recently widowed\, who is very indecisive and dependent.\nNora (older daughter) The daughter of Blanche and cousin to the Jerome boys is a very beautiful and ambitious teen with dreams of Broadway.\nLaurie (younger daughter) The daughter of Blanche and cousin to the Jerome boys is a studious\, quiet young teen.\n\nActors can come to one or both auditions\, which should take about two hours. Individuals auditioning will be asked to read portions of the script with other actors. There are no requirements to prepare for the audition\, but please bring a list of dates when you will not be available for weekday evening rehearsals from November 29 through January 31. \nProductions dates for Brighton Beach Memoirs are February 1\, 2\, 3\, 8\, 9\, and 10 at Prairie Players Civic Theatre. \nLearn more at prairieplayers.com.

SUMMARY:"Understanding the Midterm Elections" with Amy Walter
DESCRIPTION:Making sense out of this year’s midterm elections will be the topic of an upcoming talk at Monmouth College\, given by one of the nation’s top political analysts. \n“Understanding the Midterm Elections” will be discussed by political journalist Amy Walter. Her talk will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday\, Nov. 27\, in the College’s Wells Theater. The program is free is open to the public. \nWalter’s talk\, which is part of the College’s Midwest Matters initiative\, is made possible by support from Security Savings Bank of Monmouth. \nWalter is the national editor of The Cook Political Report\, an online political newsletter that is considered to be one of the best non-partisan news sources for politics. \nWalter will dissect and deconstruct the meaning of the recent midterm elections\, in which Democrats recaptured the U.S. House of Representatives and Republicans held on control of the Senate\, giving President Donald Trump a divided Congress for the last two years of his first term. \n“Democrats wanted this election to be about more than just winning the House or the Senate. They wanted 2018 to be a total rebuke of Trump. A wipeout of epic proportions all across the country. That didn’t happen\,” Walter wrote in a recent column on The Cook Political Report. “What we saw instead was more of a retrenchment. Red areas stayed red; blue areas stayed blue. The only real movement was in districts that were purple – districts that had voted for Hillary Clinton\, Barack Obama or had narrowly supported Trump – tipped overwhelmingly to Democrats.” \nWith more than 20 years of experience\, Walter has earned a reputation for being accurate and objective with unparalleled access to campaign insiders and decision-makers. She was named one of the “50 Top Journalists” in Washington\, D.C.\, by Washingtonian Magazine in 2009. \nWalter is also host of WNYC-FM’s The Takeaway (Politics with Amy Walter)\, and a regular contributor to the PBS NewsHour\, where she offers her perspective weekly on “Politics Monday\,” as well as NBC’s Meet the Press\, Fox News’ Special Report with Bret Baier and CBS’ Face the Nation. \nA summa cum laude graduate from Colby (Maine) College\, Walter also received an honorary degree from her alma mater\, where she now serves as a trustee emerita.

SUMMARY:House of Hamill: featuring Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis and Rose Baldino of Burning Bridget Cleary
DESCRIPTION:“Their songs are always on the edge of traditional and innovation . . . their performances are electrifying”. – Sarah MacArthur\, Highlander Radio \nHouse of Hamill features Brian Buchanan of Enter the Haggis and Rose Baldino of Burning Bridget Cleary. \nTheir music has been described as “Radiohead meets Riverdance”; Celtic-inspired\, exciting\, eclectic and unpredictable. House of Hamill’s music occupies a space between traditional Irish music and sophisticated indie/pop. \nWhether House of Hamill is playing songs from their debut album “Wide Awake” (2016) or stomping through a set of original jigs and reels from their follow-up “March Through Storms” (2018)\, their chemistry onstage is always engaging and often hilarious. Spend an hour listening and you’ll leave with tired feet\, a huge smile\, and a new appreciation for the versatility of folk instruments in a modern context.\nHouse of Hamill Bio:\nRose Baldino and Brian Buchanan met 10 years ago\, late one night backstage at a theatre in rural Pennsylvania. \nBrian’s band Enter the Haggis and Rose’s group Burning Bridget Cleary were sharing a stage that evening\, and the two bonded over a love of Irish fiddle tunes\, Radiohead\, and 4 AM whiskey. Their paths crossed a dozen times over the next decade on the road\, but it wasn’t until the Folk Alliance 2014 conference in Kansas City that they finally became musical collaborators. \nBurning Bridget Cleary’s guitarist and drummer had their flights canceled at the last minute\, and in desperation\, Rose asked Brian to grab a guitar and join her onstage. The two performed with virtually no rehearsal for over an hour\, and their connection was powerful and immediate. A few months later Brian moved from Canada to Philadelphia\, and as a tribute to the first tune Rose ever taught Brian\, House of Hamill was born.\nBoth Baldino and Buchanan are accomplished traditional fiddle players and classical violinists\, with over 25 years of writing and performance experience between them. Together\, they write unusual new fiddle tunes and exciting\, unpredictable original songs while breathing new life into traditional and contemporary songs. Both are confident and unique lead vocalists\, and the blend of their two voices in harmony is hypnotic and irresistible.
