DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed teacher and author Erin Gruwell will present with remarks focusing on educational equality and the value of diversity on Thursday\, September 28 at 7 p.m. in the Kresge Theater in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts. The presentation is free and open to the public. \nGruwell is the founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation. She created the Freedom Writers Methodology\, a progressive teaching philosophy and curricula designed to achieve acceptance and excellence from all students. She currently tours around the world to teach educators how to implement her innovative lesson plans into their own classrooms. \nA graduate of the University of California-Irvine\, she received the Lauds and Laurels Distinguished Alumni Award. She earned her Master’s Degree and teaching credentials from California State University-Long Beach\, where she was honored as Distinguished Alumna by the School of Education. \nGruwell guided 150 of her students\, many of whom were written off by the education system\, to use the power of education to graduate from high school and attend college. \nThrough the experience Gruwell and her students wrote and published “The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them\,” which was later the basis of the 2007 movie “Freedom Writers\,” starring Hilary Swank. In the book\, Gruwell discusses how she challenged her students to overcome the seemingly insurmountable problems of poverty\, racism\, violence through writing. \nThe presentation is sponsored by the Knox Cultural Affairs Committee\, Educational Studies Department\, and the Western Illinois Reading Council (WIRC).

DESCRIPTION:On October 6\, you can rock out to the hits from The Beatles\, The Byrds\, The Hollies\, Paul Revere and the Raiders\, The Kinks\, America and more as Quad City favorite THE GENERATIONS BAND\, a 4 piece 60’s and 70’s rock and pop group\, take over the Seminary Street stage. \nMade up of 4 passionate musicians from the Quad City Area\, THE GENERATIONS BAND puts on a one of the kind 60’s and 70’s tribute show. Guitarist and vocalist Tom Vaccaro said\, “We are a 5 piece band playing mostly 60s songs that no other area bands are doing\, such as hits by Simon and Garfunkel\, Paul Revere and The Raiders\, Herman’s Hermits\, and much more!  We focus on vocals\, especially the tight harmonies as we all sing and that gives us an edge\,” Vaccaro added. Notable solo performers in their own right\, the group prides itself on not only its musicianship but also its showmanship. \nPrairie Player’s Program Administrator Tristan Tapscott said\, “We are still in the early stages of this new program where we bring in artists from the across the region and provide something new for our audiences to experience in our new space.” “We can build an excellent party atmosphere in our open concept theatre space and we are excited to show that off with this event!” \nThe bar and lobby doors open at 6:00pm and seating begins at 6:30pm. The beauty of the fall colors that so many of us have had in our backyard makes us proud to invite visitors to come and take in the wonders of Mother Nature along the Spoon River. This year we are especially looking forward to seeing our many guests and returning friends as we celebrate the 50th year of the Spoon River Valley Scenic Drive Fall Festival! \nThanks to the vision of some dedicated residents who lived along the banks of Spoon River\, the Scenic Drive was born. The founding members of the Scenic Drive opened their properties to visitors that first Saturday and Sunday\, October 5 & 6\, 1968. The many visitors and the beautiful weather encouraged them to have a second weekend. The SRVSD Fall Festival has continued to be held each year during the first two full weekends of October. \nAs you make your way along the many roads that border the Spoon River\, we also would like to invite you to visit Elmwood in Peoria County\, and Havana River Front Park in Mason County. Both of these communities border Fulton County and have rich history to share as well. Come – enjoy the natural wonders of the Spoon River Valley. Our many SRVSD Associates invite you to enjoy their antiques\, artistic wares\, beautiful scenery\, delicious foods\, entertainment and demonstrations.
