SUMMARY:M-RHS Drama Club presents THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER
DESCRIPTION:The Monmouth-Roseville High School Drama Club will present its fall production\, the comedy The Man Who Came to Dinner\, on Friday\, November 1\, and Saturday\, November 2\, at 7:00pm in the M-RHS auditorium. \nThis classic three-act comedy\, written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman and directed by M-RHS English teacher Melissa Agar\, finds the Ohio home of Ernest and Daisy Stanley being thrown into chaos by the arrival of radio star Sheridan Whiteside. When Whiteside slips on a patch of ice on their front porch\, putting him in a wheelchair\, the Stanleys are forced to deal with Whiteside’s extravagant demands\, eccentric pals\, and the arrival of an increasingly bizarre array of get well gifts. Meanwhile\, Whiteside’s long-suffering secretary\, Maggie\, finds herself falling for local journalist Bert Jefferson\, and Whiteside has to act to keep Maggie from abandoning him for her new love. \nTickets for the production cost $7 for adults and $3 for students with ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door. It is asked that students junior high and younger be accompanied by an adult.

SUMMARY:Monmouth College Observatory Night
DESCRIPTION:Weather permitting\, Monmouth College will offer the public an opportunity to look 2.5 million light years into space on Nov. 2. \nThe College will host an open observatory night from 7-9 p.m. at the Center for the Science and Business. \nThe event will feature activities outside\, inside and on top of the building\, which houses the Adolphson Observatory and the 20-inch Trubeck Telescope. \n“We’ll have telescopes at the front of the building – the Broadway side – and activities inside on the second floor\, and we’ll be taking folks up to the rooftop observatory\,” said physics professor Mike Solontoi. \nThe event\, which is free\, is suitable and suggested for all ages\, although the Adolphson Observatory is only accessible via a flight of stairs. \n“We plan on observing the Moon\, Jupiter and Saturn\,” said Solontoi. “We may also take a look at the Ring Nebula\, the Andromeda Galaxy and/or a nice star cluster if the night has nice clear air.” \nSolontoi said that the Trubeck Telescope allows Monmouth students to see much farther into space than was previously possible. \n“We routinely look at the Whirlpool Galaxy\, about 23 million light years away from Earth\, and we can still see structure in it through just an eye-piece\,” he said. “With a dark enough night\, or using a camera\, we can easily see objects that are tens to hundreds of times further away.” \nInside the Center for the Science and Business\, activities will include a space where children can make their own constellations and a demonstration of making a model comet out of dry ice.

SUMMARY:Mercer County Marker Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Makaila Hootman\, Mercer County Fair Queen 2019\, is partnering with local citizens and establishments to host a fundraiser. It will be held on Wednesday November 6th with a free will donation dinner at United High School prior to the UHS Fall Band Concert. There will also be a pie/dessert auction at 6:30 prior to the concert. This dinner is to raise funds for The Mercer County Marker Committee that was established to ensure that every veteran’s gravesite has a marker within Mercer County. The markers are a bronze metal star with a brass rod that holds a flag and cost $30 each. The committee has placed over 760 markers to date within Mercer County. Quite a feat as each cemetery has to be researched prior to placement.

SUMMARY:Talk on Arab Spring
DESCRIPTION:In the early part of this decade\, a series of anti-government protests\, uprisings and armed rebellions spread across much of the Islamic world and came to be known as the Arab Spring. \nA former member of the U.S. foreign service who’s written a highly acclaimed book on the Arab Spring will help make sense of the events from an American perspective during a Nov. 7 talk at Monmouth College. \nFormer U.S. diplomat Mietek Boduszynski will deliver a talk titled “How the U.S. Lost the Arab Spring” at 4 p.m. in Room 276 of the Center for Science and Business. His talk – which is sponsored by the Monmouth Center for Civic and Social Change – is free and open to the public. \nBoduszynski\, who is now a professor at Pomona (Calif.) College\, will also participate in a Nov. 8 campus event that will include lunch with Monmouth students. He’ll offer advice on how to become a diplomat and work for the State Department. \n“Mietek brings together both real-world experience in the region and a strong academic background\, which is a rare combination\,” said Monmouth political science professor Mike Nelson\, who is a longtime friend of Boduszynski. \nNelson said the Arab Spring was “an important turning point for many parts of the Middle East and North Africa.” \n“At moments\, it seemed like the entire region might be on the cusp of a new transition into democracy\,” he said. “Instead\, the legacy has been disappointment and greater insecurity throughout the region.” \nIn September\, Boduszynski’s latest book\, U.S. Democracy Promotion in the Arab World: Beyond Interests vs. Ideals\, was released. The book combines Boduszynski’s experiences on the ground as a U.S. diplomat during the Arab Spring with scores of behind-the-scenes interviews with key policy makers in Washington. \nIn a review\, New York Times international correspondent David D. Kirkpatrick wrote: “Anyone who wants to understand the U.S. role in the unhappy outcome of the Arab uprisings must read this book. With extraordinary clarity and insight\, his book cuts through all the usual clichés and hypothetical debates to address critical questions about why it all went wrong.” \nIn addition to witnessing the Arab Spring firsthand\, Boduszynski was present in Libya when the Benghazi incident occurred and was in Iraq during the height of the battle against the Islamic State. A frequent op-ed contributor to publications such as The Hill\, Foreign Affairs and The Washington Post\, Boduszynski’s research also includes work on transitional justice and a book on democratization in the Balkans.

SUMMARY:Get information about civil legal problems
DESCRIPTION:Operating out of the basement of the Knox County Courthouse\, Illinois JusticeCorps members provide legal information and procedural guidance to individuals faced with legal issues. JusticeCorps Fellow and Knox College alumni Deja Jenkins is reaching out to the community to ensure residents know of the program’s presence and services offered\, as well as collect information on future workshops and information sessions. \nJusticeCorps will be available in the lobby of the Galesburg Public Library on Friday and Saturday\, November 8th and 9th\, 2019\, from 1 to 4 PM. They are NOT lawyers and therefore CANNOT give legal advice. However\, they welcome anyone and everyone to stop by and learn about what Illinois JusticeCorps can do for you or a loved one facing a civil legal issue. We are trying to collect information about what people are interested in getting help with. Stop by our table and fill out a survey for a chance to win a $50 gift card! \nAbout Illinois JusticeCorps in Knox County \nIllinois JusticeCorps is an innovative AmeriCorps program that places volunteer members\, often college students or recent graduates\, in courthouses throughout the state. It began as a pilot program in Cook County in 2009 and expanded to Knox County in 2014. \nMembers are specially trained to serve as guides to make the courts more welcoming and less intimidating for people without lawyers. JusticeCorps volunteers are familiar with the legal aid resources available in each courthouse and community to provide appropriate referrals to those who\nneed legal advice or full representation. For more information\, please visit https://www.illinoisbarfoundation.org/illinois-justicecorps.
