SUMMARY:The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)
DESCRIPTION:Prairie Players Civic Theatre is taking Shakespeare outside. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is the first production to be performed in a pageant wagon on the theatre’s newly opened back patio. \n“This show is all about summer vacation\,” says Director Betsy Hippely. “You’ve got your backyard patio\, your comfy lawn chair\, your special cocktail concoction\, sunset over the city\, and a wacky 16th century vaudeville show to entertain you. What’s not to like?” \nPerformances will be at 160 South Seminary Street\, Galesburg\, on Fridays and Saturdays\, July 13\, 14\, 20\, and 21 beginning at 8 p.m. on the theatre’s back patio. The audience is asked to bring lawn chairs to the production. Performances will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather. \nPerformances on Sunday\, July 15 and 22\, will be at 2 p.m. in the theatre. \nHippely says that Shakespeare (abridged) is a “Nothing-is-sacred take on the Shakespearean canon” as four actors weave their way through all of Shakespeare’s comedies\, histories\, and tragedies (37 in all) in about 90 minutes. \nThe production is a challenging one for the four actors. “They’ve all had to develop\, in addition to their basic actor-in-the-company role\, nine to 12 other characters\, many of whom have only one or two lines to build on\,” says Hippely. “ And then there’s the physical comedy required of each role—voices\, walks\, tricks and bits—not to mention timing. Talk about layers!” \nActor Cameron Line says the biggest challenge is to do justice to the world’s most famous and influential plays while being funny. “Preparing for this show has involved studying iambic pentameter and watching Mel Brooks movies. It’s reverential and uproarious at the same time.” \nIn addition to Line\, rounding out the cast of four are Michael Buebe\, Luke Lawson\, and Joey Lucero. \nHippely says that both the actors and crew have been on a steep learning curve with Prairie Players’ first outdoor venture at the theatre. There are a lot of distractions (weather\, moving props and lights indoors and out nightly\, street and train noise) that are unique to an outdoor venue. \nAnother unique element is the pageant wagon\, which is being provided courtesy of Knox College. The wagon’s base is from a 6-by-10-foot grain wagon\, with a large box on top that folds out into a 7-by-20-foot performance space. “The wagon is a joy\,” says Hippely. “It affords a surprising amount of versatility for levels and entrances; it’s got a great rustic look\, enhancing the freestyle mode of the show\, and it gives us a unique venue that works as well in a park or on a city street as it does here in our own backyard.” \nThe Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is made possible through the support by Blick Art Materials. \n(Photo\, left to right: Cameron Line\, Michael Buebe\, Joey Lucero. SUMMARY:Sweet Crude and Upstate Rubdown
DESCRIPTION:The Levitt Amp Galva Concert Series continues July 15 with Sweet Crude with Upstate Rubdown. Galva’s Wiley Park provides ample shade for your lawn chairs and blankets\, a playground for the kids\, and plenty of places to play and dance. The event will begin with a Vendor Fair from 2-6. Kewanee Community Band will provide dinner entertainment from 4:30-5:30. Geneseo Moose Lodge #990 will host a fundraiser dinner beginning at 4:30. The Concert begins at 6 with Upstate Rubdown followed by Sweet Crude at 7. Rain location is in the Galva High School. This is a FREE concert open to everyone. \nUpstate Rubdown is an acoustic septet drawing inspiration from every corner (and decade) of America’s musical heritage. Based in New York’s Hudson Valley region\, the band has spent years cultivating its sound\, and continues to grow by the tune. The instrumentation includes Harry D’Agostino on upright bass\, Ryan Chappell on mandolin\, Dean Mahoney on cajón\, and Christian Joao on flute and alto/baritone saxophone. The dynamic rhythm section supports a three part vocal harmony powerhouse of founding members Mary Kenney and Melanie Glenn with recent Nashville-transplant Allison Olender. http://www.upstaterubdown.com/ \nSweet Crude is indigenous to South Louisiana. They want to show the world that we can make progressive music that also embraces this region’s French-speaking tradition. They are joining a small but fervent group of young Louisianians engaged in keeping the language relevant via art. In July\, they will be visiting Ottawa\, Toronto\, Montréal\, the Midwest and Southeast US. http://sweetcrudeband.com/ \nAbout the Galva Arts Council\nThe mission of the Galva Arts Council is to enrich the quality of life in our town through the advancement and promotion of the arts\, the encouragement of the appreciation of the arts through participation and attendance of art events\, the provision of membership services\, and advocacy for the arts. If you are interested in being a vendor or volunteer at any of the concerts\, let the Arts Council know at john.r.taylor@gmail.com or 309-299-4999. \nAbout the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation\nThe Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation is a private foundation that exists to strengthen the social fabric of America. Through its support of creative placemaking\, the Levitt Foundation empowers communities to transform underused public spaces into welcoming destinations where the power of free\, live music brings people together and invigorates community life. The Foundation’s primary funding areas include permanent Levitt venues and the Levitt AMP [Your City] Grant Awards\, an annual grants competition. During the past decade\, the Foundation has awarded more than $20 million in grants to support access to free\, high-caliber live music experiences while bringing new life to public spaces.

SUMMARY:Sophistafunk and High Up
DESCRIPTION:The Levitt Amp Galva Concert Series continues July 22 with Sophistafunk with High Up. Galva’s Wiley Park provides ample shade for your lawn chairs and blankets\, a playground for the kids\, and plenty of places to play and dance. The event will begin with a Vendor Fair from 2-6. Chris Stevens will provide dinner entertainment from 4:30-5:30. Knights of Columbus will host a fundraiser dinner beginning at 4:30. The concert begins at 6 with High Up followed by Sophistafunk at 7. Rain location is in the Galva High School. This is a FREE concert open to everyone. \nHigh Up singer Christine Fink moved to Omaha to be closer to her sister\, notable singer songwriter Orenda Fink. The first time Orenda saw Christine sing Orenda’s jaw dropped as she watched Christine bring the house down. After a few years in Omaha\, Orenda noticed that Christine brought the house down no matter where she was singing- with people of all ages and walks of life lining up to buy her drinks and even give her requests to sing their favorite soul songs. One night\, the two began to talk about the future\, and Orenda insisted that Christine should try and do what makes her happiest- perform for people. After much discussion\, they decided to start High up\, a collaboration mixing elements of indie\, punk and soul that showcased Christine’s powerful vocals and Orenda’s seasoned songwriting. The band includes Josh Soto\, Todd Fink and Matt Focht and draws from a wide variety of influences- from Janis Joplin\, Sam Cooke\, and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins to Dead Kennedys and The Birthday Party. https://high-up-tl.bandcamp.com/ \nSOPHISTAFUNK met in 2007 and rapidly evolved into a national-touring live act. Known for their HUGE sound (created by only three members)\, the band has won over crowds with a captivating stage presence and tight musicianship. Sophistafunk has gained international notoriety with their unique combination of live hip hop\, funk\, and jam music. Rooted by old school funk / hip hop\, the trio explores electronic dance grooves while infusing each tune with soul and positively charged lyrics. SOPHISTAFUNK is a multi-genre tour de force\, jam packed with vintage tones and live instruments. Catch ONE show\, and you will be hooked! \nAbout the Galva Arts Council\nThe mission of the Galva Arts Council is to enrich the quality of life in our town through the advancement and promotion of the arts\, the encouragement of the appreciation of the arts through participation and attendance of art events\, the provision of membership services\, and advocacy for the arts.
