SUMMARY:Lecture on Hercules
DESCRIPTION:For more than 30 years\, classics professor Tom Sienkewicz directed Monmouth College’s Fox Lecture program\, bringing to campus speakers who told how classics relates to the modern world and how it intersects with other liberal arts disciplines. \nThis year\, the professor emeritus of classics who founded the lecture series has been given the “Herculean” task of presenting it. \nSienkewicz\, who retired in 2017\, will give the Fox Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Pattee Auditorium of the Center for Science and Business. Titled “Hercules Politicus in Art: The Mythic Hero as Political Role Model from Alexander the Great to Vladimir Putin\,” the talk is free and open to the public. \nSienkewicz’s broad historical survey will include how Roman emperors\, Medici rulers\, U.S. presidents and other prominent figures identified with and were connected to Hercules in such media as coins\, painting\, sculpture and editorial cartoons. The examples will be analyzed and the associations with Hercules explained. \nThe lecture series honors the late Bernice L. Fox\, who taught English\, Latin and Greek at Monmouth from 1947-81. \n“When I came to the College (in 1984)\, I thought it was very important for Bernice to feel recognized\, but also it would be good for the classics program to have a major lecture every year\,” said Sienkewicz\, who served as the Minnie Billings Capron Professor of Classics. “Bernice was a really remarkable woman. Monmouth College\, in many ways\, was her life. She had a cadre on students who really appreciated what she did for them.” \nFox gave the inaugural lecture in 1985\, and for many subsequent years\, Sienkewicz invited her former students and colleagues to be the featured speaker. \n“It created a really nice tie between the College and its alumni\,” said Sienkewicz. “I think I’m the last person alive who hasn’t given the lecture who knew Bernice and was her friend.” \nFrom 1984-2007\, Sienkewicz offered a full classics program essentially single-handedly and designed a unique\, award-winning Triad curriculum. He is also the author of books and articles on the classical world\, including Disce! An Elementary Latin Course with Kenneth Kitchell and Vergil: A Legamus Transitional Reader with the late LeaAnn Osburn ’72. \nSienkewicz has served as president of the Illinois Classical Conference\, vice president of the American Classical League and executive secretary of Eta Sigma Phi. He is currently secretary-treasurer of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South and business manager of The Classical Journal. He is the recipient of numerous awards\, including Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Illinois Classical Conference and Eta Sigma Phi.

SUMMARY:"Great Decisions" Discission on US-China Trade
DESCRIPTION:At 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 in Room 276 of the Center for Science and Business\, Monmouth political science professor Farhat Haq will lead the next Great Decisions program\, discussing U.S.-China trade. \nThough arguably the most advanced economy in the world\, the United States still uses centuries-old numbers to measure trade. These antique numbers mangle understanding of the U.S.-China trade relationship\, shrinking America’s true economic size and competitiveness\, while swelling China’s. \nBad numbers give rise to bad policies that ultimately kill U.S. jobs and cede market share to China. What other tools can the United States employ to counter China’s unfair trade practices? There are several available\, yet they remain mostly unused. \nCalled “America’s largest discussion program on world affairs\,” Great Decisions is a nationwide program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association\, a non-partisan\, non-governmental association that works to increase Americans’ understanding of foreign policy issues.

SUMMARY:Knox College Theatre Department to Present "The Children's Hour" and "The Laramie Project"
DESCRIPTION:The Knox College Theatre Department will present two Repertory Theatre Term plays\, “The Children’s Hour” and “The Laramie Project\,” in rotation from February 21 through March 2 in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts on the Knox campus. \nLillian Hellman’s 1934 play\, “The Children’s Hour\,” interrogates social perceptions and norms as two women who run a boarding school are accused of “sexual deviance.” The play is directed by Knox faculty member Elizabeth Carlin Metz\, Smith V. Brand Endowed Chair in Theatre Arts. It opens February 21 with subsequent performances on February 23\, February 26\, February 28\, and March 2 in Harbach Theatre. \n“The Laramie Project” chronicles the reaction to the 1998 murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie\, Wyoming. It draws on interviews from residents of the town\, news reports\, and journals entries. The play\, directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Jeff Grace\, opens February 22 with subsequent performances on February 23\, February 27\, March 1\, and March 2 in Studio Theatre. \nTickets for each of the plays are $10 for adults\, $5 for senior citizens and Knox College alumni\, and free to Knox College students\, faculty and staff. Tickets are available at the door one hour before each performance or by calling 309-341-7472 to reserve in advance. \nThe two plays are presented by Knox’s Repertory Theatre Term\, also known as Rep Term. The immersive term — a three-credit course — is specifically designed so the participating students\, along with faculty directors and designers\, devote all their time to all aspects of producing two full-length shows. \nDuring Rep Term\, students collaborate on multiple crews (such as set construction\, props\, and publicity)\, and they play on-stage and off-stage roles in one or both productions. Students also learn about dramaturgy\, and they study and conduct independent research related to the plays. \nEstablished in 1970 by the late Knox theatre professors Robert Whitlatch and Ivan Davidson\, Rep Term is produced every three years by the Department of Theatre. It is the only undergraduate theatre program in the United States that embeds academic study of theatre within the experience of forming a repertory company that produces two fully staged productions. \nThe performance schedule is similar to that used by professional repertory theatre companies. The plays are performed on a rotating basis over a 10-day-run\, including two Saturdays with both matinee and evening performances. \nStudents participating in Repertory Theatre Term\, along with their assignments\, are: \nKatherine Asteriadou\, cast in “The Children’s Hour”\nIris Berto\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project”\nEmma Bohman\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project”\nMitchel Boyle\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project\,” Master Carpenter\nOlive Colangelo\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project\,” Co-Master Electrician\, Sound designer for “The Children’s Hour”\nFlora Florova\, Assistant Stage Manager for “The Children’s Hour”\nMarion Frank\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” Assistant Lighting designer\nJohn Harden\, cast in “The Children’s Hour”\nJamie Heller\, Assistant Production Manager\, Assistant Stage Manager for “The Children’s Hour”\nJo Hill\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project\,” Co-Master Electrician\, Costume crew chief for “The Children’s Hour”\nKaitlyn Hrivnak\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project”\nOllie Jeoung\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” Assistant Director for “The Laramie Project\,” Dramaturgy crew chief\nVan Johnson\, cast in “The Children’s Hour”\nOlivia Lemke\, Production Manager\, Stage Manager for “The Laramie Project”\nGil Martinez\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project”\nShannon Mindlin\, cast in “The Children’s Hour\,” House Manager for “The Laramie Project”\nRiley Nelson\, cast in “The Laramie Project\,” Stage Manager for “The Children’s Hour\,” Publicity Crew Chief\nPaula Pierce\, Company Manager\, costume crew chief for “The Laramie Project\,” cast in “The Laramie Project\,” House Manager for “The Children’s Hour”\nPeter Rule\, Costume Designer for “The Children’s Hour\,” cast in “The Laramie Project”\nLola Stam\, cast in “The Children’s Hour”\nCammie Stein\, Assistant Stage Manager for “The Children’s Hour\,” Assistant Scenic Designer\, Assistant Lighting Designer\, Painting Crew Chief\nAllison Stout\, cast in “The Children’s Hour”\nCharmaine Vankirk\, cast in “The Laramie Project”\nJoel Willison\, cast in “The Laramie Project\,” Assistant Director for “The Children’s Hour”\nErin Yu\, Assistant Stage Manager for “The Laramie Project\,” Sound designer for “The Laramie Project” \n(Photo is from “The Laramie Project”)

SUMMARY:Monmouth Associates Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:At the next Monmouth Associates program on Feb. 21\, educational studies professors Tammy La Prad\, Michelle Holschuh Simmons and Craig Vivian will shed light on challenges faced by rural districts and also explain the College’s new education initiatives. \nThe program will begin at noon in the Whiteman-McMillan Highlander Room of Stockdale Student Center. \nTeaching at an institution located in a rural area\, the College’s educators are keenly aware of some rural school districts’ struggle to recruit and retain teachers. In response to that need\, the educational studies department has developed several initiatives\, including its Rural Teacher Corps and TARTANS – Teachers Allied with Rural Towns and Neighborhood Schools. \nThe cost for a buffet lunch is $10 ($9 for Monmouth faculty and staff). Reservations can be made by calling 309-457-2231 by Feb. 19 or by email at alumni@monmouthcollege.edu. \nA free shuttle van transports passengers from two locations to every Associates luncheon. The van stops at the northeast quadrant of the Public Square at 11:45 a.m. and at the Faith United Presbyterian Church parking lot at around 11:50 a.m. It returns to both locations immediately following the program. Shuttle reservations can be made also by calling 309-457-2231. \nParking is available along North Ninth Street and in the parking lot near the Stockdale Center.

SUMMARY:"Talking With"
DESCRIPTION:“The best among us have had so many imprints left upon them…and these people pass their time interpreting their signs and those moments of sharing are the best of life” Alternatively\, funny\, sad\, bizarre\, uplifting and frightening\, the play “Talking With” is just like life. For 3 performances only\, “Talking With” by Jane Martin will be performed in the banquet room of 156 East (156 E Main St\, Galesburg) on Friday and Saturday\, February 22\, 23 at 7:30 pm and Sunday\, February 24 at 2:00 pm. Tickets may be purchased by calling 309-532-7840 or by contacting Sugar High Theatricals at sugarhightheatricals@gmail.com. Proceeds from the production will be donated to the David F Ferguson Excellence in Arts Scholarship and the Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center. \n“Talking With” holds a mirror up to the lives of 12 very different women and features a cast of 11 actresses\, ranging in age from 18 to 60+. Local theatre veterans Chris Curtis and Melissa Agar play Lila\, a woman who has reacted to aging by becoming obsessed with light and Laurie\, who is dealing with her mother’s recent death\, respectively. Company members Erin Darling\, Samantha Carr\, Julie Agar\, Rowan Williamson and Grace Robbins portray roles as varied as a former rodeo worker\, a homeless woman\, a baton twirler\, a successful scientist\, and a Southern snake handler. Newcomers Lori Johnson and Kaylyn Schafer play an actress tired of “lacerating self-exposure” and a housewife spending too much time in her fantasy life. Kelsi Ford joins the Sugar High company for the first time portraying 2 roles: a woman in her 23rd hour of labor and an actress willing to do anything to get a part. \n“I knew for our February slot\, I wanted to do a fundraiser for the women’s shelter and our scholarship program. I looked at several plays but chose “Talking With” because it gave many actresses a chance to do some real work.” says director Melanie Delbridge-Heskett. “So often\, we as actresses\, get stuck playing a stereotype rather than a person. You are the mother or the vamp or the girl-next-door but not a person. I love this play because these are women you may know\, that you can love or hate. Not all of them are good people. I think maybe that is the most feminist statement I can make: that this play has 12 women’s roles and that it isn’t about women. It just happens to have 12 women’s roles but it actually is a play about belief. Each one of these women is telling her story about what she believes in; for example\, in one of the funniest monologues\, Samantha Carr plays a homeless woman who believes in McDonalds. Her story of a man being healed by a Big Mac is hilarious and touching all at once. I think Grace’s baton twirler and my tattooed lady are not someone you would want to be friends with but they believe so strongly\, that they are fascinating to watch.” \n“I think the best thing about this play is the range of emotions the audience will experience” continues Delbridge-Heskett. “One minute you will be tearing up at a touching story and the next you will be laughing hysterically. This play is definitely not something that is done in this area often and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to come see these actresses create such amazing and believable characters. I am proud to be a part of the work these women are doing and even prouder that it is for a good cause like Safe Harbor.” \nTickets are available with a reservation or at the door for the performances at the banquet room of 156 East (156 E Main St\, Galesburg). Show-only seats are $15.00 per person or are just $5.00 for students. Show only tickets can be reserved up to three hours prior to showtime; however\, reservations are recommended as seating is very limited. Alcoholic beverages and concessions are available for an additional charge. Senior discount and active military discount available upon request. Tickets may be purchased by calling 309-532-7840 or by contacting Sugar High Theatricals at sugarhightheatricals@gmail.com. The show is rated PG due to language.

SUMMARY:Writers@Monmouth Series Presentation
DESCRIPTION:When you ask John McCarthy why he writes poems\, he’s quick to point to the landscape that has shaped him. \nIn McCarthy’s words\, he writes “to showcase and illuminate the diverse experiences of Midwestern life that are hiding among its prairies\, fields and cities\, as well as venerate its often underappreciated beauty.” \nMonmouth College students and community members will have a chance to hear from McCarthy at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Mellinger Teaching Learning Center when he reads from his new collection of poetry\, Scared Violent like Horses. \nHis second collection\, McCarthy’s latest volume was chosen by notable writer Victoria Chang as the winner of the Jake Adam York Prize\, sponsored by literary publishing leader Milkweed Books. \nThe poems in this new collection\, along with McCarthy’s earlier Ghost County\, challenge the notion of “anything outside of Chicago as agricultural flyover country.” Now a Chicago resident himself\, McCarthy wants to complicate and reconsider this often oversimplified region. \n“It is the expansiveness of the Midwest – Illinois\, specifically\,” he said\, “which has allowed me to explore the deep themes of trauma\, grief and loss\, as well the intersections of race and class.” \nIn addition to his afternoon reading\, McCarthy will meet with students studying contemporary American poetry and members of a Reflections class on masculinity\, as well as interact with environmental studies students. \nAssociate Professor of English David Wright will host the visiting writer. \n“I’m excited\, again\, to have a poet of John’s caliber here to engage with our student writers and readers\,” said Wright. “Already\, the upper division poetry students have been eagerly reading his work and developing questions to ask him during our class session.” \nWright pointed out the value of having working writers on campus: “Literature is a living thing\, and there’s no better way to understand that than to have writers shaped by this very place who are making challenging\, meaningful art from their experience. ” \nMcCarthy will have copies of his work for sale at the reading. For more information about the poet himself\, visit https://johnmccarthylit.wordpress.com/. For information about Writers@Monmouth visit\, contact Wright at dcwright@monmouthcollege.edu.
