DESCRIPTION:The Bishop Hill Heritage Association is hosting a free concert called Booth Shot Lincoln: Folksongs of Illinois\, 1818 to 1960 at 1:30 p.m. in the Dairy Building on Saturday\, May 5. Songs include historical ballads that recount the stories of catastrophes\, protest songs from the mills\, gospel tunes\, bluegrass\, early country songs\, and dance tunes from every ethnic group to settle in the Prairie State. Chicago-based singer and guitarist Bucky Halker brings a sample of these songs to life through both performance and commentary. This program runs approximately 60-70 minutes\, with additional time for questions and answers. It is free and open to the public due to the sponsorships of the BHHA and the Illinois Humanities Council Road Scholar Speakers Bureau. The Dairy Building is located at 410 North Erickson Street. For more details about this concert\, please call 309 927-3899 or email bhha@mymctc.net. \nThe current edition of the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau\, presented in cooperation with the Illinois Bicentennial Commission and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum\, consists of presentations exploring Illinois history and culture in recognition of the state’s 200th anniversary. Bucky Halker has drawn on his extensive knowledge of Illinois folk music gained from years of research and his production of the five-volume CD series\, Folksongs of Illinois\, to produce this program. Illinois has rich and diverse folk music traditions that remain under recognized by both specialists and the public. From the beginning of Illinois statehood through the folk revival that swept the nation and state in the 1950s\, the many people who have made Illinois their home produced a huge body of folk songs and music. What better time than the Illinois Bicentennial to invite the citizens of our state to hear and appreciate the folk music legacy of the Land of Lincoln?

DESCRIPTION:The Galesburg Public Library Board of Trustees has unanimously approved the appointment of J. Zachary Holt to be the library’s director\, effective May 7\, 2018. Mr. Holt replaces Ms. Harriett Zipfel\, who retired in October 2017 after six years as director. \nMr. Holt began his library career at the Towanda District Library and has served at the Lexington Public Library District and the Chatsworth Township Library. Since 2015\, he has been the director of the Forrest Public District Library in Forrest\, Illinois. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Illinois College\, where he majored in English literature and minored in Japanese Studies\, and received his Master’s in Library and Information Science from Dominican University. He said “I am eagerly awaiting this new opportunity to serve the city of Galesburg. I hope to build upon the foundations of quality service and programming set by the Galesburg Public Library staff\, trustees\, volunteers and patrons. I believe that\, collectively\, we at GPL can continue to make a positive impact upon our patrons and the community at large.” \nBoard President Laurie Muelder said “We were pleased to have a strong pool of candidates from which to choose and welcome Zack’s enthusiasm\, knowledge\, and vision to the Galesburg Public Library.” \nMembers of the community are invited to meet Mr. Holt over coffee and cake on Monday\, May 7\, from 4:30-5:30 pm in the library’s lobby.

DESCRIPTION:Knox College Theatre presents “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams\, at 7:30 p.m.\, Wednesday May 9 through Saturday\, May 12\, in Studio Theatre\, Ford Center for the Fine Arts\, on the Knox campus in Galesburg. \nTickets are $10 for adults\, $5 for senior citizens and Knox College alumni\, free to all students with school ID and free to Knox College students\, faculty and staff. Tickets are available at the door one hour before each performance or by advanced reservation at 309-341-7472. Seating is extremely limited and reservations are recommended. \n“‘The Glass Menagerie’ is a “memory play” that explores the relationships between a domineering mother\, a daughter lost in a world of music and glass figurines\, and a son trapped between ambition and responsibility\,” said the director\, Jeff Grace\, associate professor of theatre. “It’s an American classic that examines Williams’ struggle to\nreconcile his identity with his shattered upbringing.” \nAs part of his research on Williams\, Grace visited St. Louis\, where the playwright grew up. “His family lived in the four places throughout the city\, and I visited the various family residences to get a feel of the different areas where he lived\,” Grace said. “I’ve brought some of my research on Tennessee Williams’s life to the cast throughout the production process.”

Master Gardeners divide some of their best varieties of perennials in an effort to raise money to help maintain the historic gardens at the nursing home. \nCome out and take a look on Friday\, May 11 or on Saturday\, May 12 from 8am to 5pm.  The Master Gardeners will have for sale hand dug perennials\, vegetables\, annuals and houseplants. While you are there\, take a tour of the gardens with one of our volunteers.  Master Gardeners will be on site to answer all of your gardening questions.  All proceeds beautify the nursing home grounds and residents program.
