The Western Illinois Wind Band will present a concert on March 14, at 7:00 p.m. at Avon Grade School All Purpose Room. This Concert Band is in its 7th year of performing concerts for West Central Illinois audiences and is directed by Bernie Potter. Mr. Potter has been named a Governor of Illinois Master Teacher in 1984, Fulton County Teacher of the Year in 1985, and Phi Meta Mu Illinois Bandmaster of the Year in 2009. Members of the Western Illinois Winds have performed with Military Bands, National Symphonies, Concert Bands throughout the Midwest, and have been featured soloists with many organizations across Illinois. Many of them are conductors, composers, and arrangers as well as school music directors. Others of the group’s members are not professional musicians but love to play and make music with others for appreciative audiences.

The March Concert features a wide variety of styles and several Guest Conductors from within the group. Opening with AMERICANS WE by Henry Fillmore, the concert continues with an extended contemporary fanfare by Bruce Broughton entitled A CELEBRATION OVERTURE. Sherrill Filzen, who played and taught in Peoria for many years, conducts a tribute to James Dean, written by Larry Daehn in a very sustained and singing style, entitled AS SUMMER WAS JUST BEGINNING. An energetic piece written in 2014 by Vince Gassi, CHASE THE SHOUTING WIND is directed by Joe Roman, former Canton Band Director and a current Bradley staff member, who also directs the Brass Section in SONATA OCTAVI TONI a double Brass Choir piece written in 1597 by Giovanni Gabrieli. The first half ends with Mr. Potter directing, A COHAN BROADWAY FESTIVAL including Give My Regards, Yankee Doodle Dandy, and You’re A Grand Old Flag.

After the intermission, BURN written by Roland Barrett for the Dallas Wind Symphony moves quickly to our featured clarinet soloist, Jo Anne Nelson playing RHAPSODY FOR SOLO CLARINET AND BAND by Anne McGinity. Deanna Chatterton is the guest conductor for the well- known Spanish piece GRANADA arranged by Augustin Lara. The Woodwinds are featured on a Mozart composition, arranged by Scott Stanton, the 1ST MOVEMENT OF SYMPHONY #40. And HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE SOUND OF MUSIC arranged by Robert Russell Bennett concludes the concert.

Something for everyone and music from 1590 to the present in many styles and timbers. And best of all there is no ticket cost. A free will offering will be taken.
