Last night $3.2 million in budget cuts were presented by Superintendent Ralph Grimm to the District 205 Board.
No total programs were eliminated but hardly any district program went unscathed, including GHS North.
If the board approves the proposal, the alternative high school would move into the high school’s main campus.
“Our kids really thrive here because we’re in kind of a separate setting.”
That’s the Principal of GHS North, Jason Spring who tells WGIL he would like North to stay put but “will make the best of it” if assimilated into the main high school.
In his opinion the current building is functionally ideal.
“It’s one of the nicest buildings. It’s one of the most energy efficient buildings. I’ve done a lot of landscaping. It’s a nice building, it’s very eye appealing even from the road.”
But a cost of $600,000 in Health/Life Safety work could be what prompts the move.
Spring’s job itself is in doubt as another proposal would be for the GHS Principal to either absorb the duties of the GAVC Director or the GHS North Principal.
Where the carousel of positions stops is complicated by the resignation of GHS Principal Roy Van Meter.
Right now Spring is just looking to improve the lives of students.
“Going from good to great we talk a lot about that and District 205 is a great school district. Galesburg is a great community and I know through a lot of hard of people we’re going to continue to be great.”
The board will take a vote to finalize these proposals next Monday.
