The Warren County Fair kicks off today even as blistering heat threatens throughout the weekend.

From today up through Saturday every day will feature a host of animal showings and every night the carnival and entertainment are available for families.

Carnival armbands are $15 per night.

In the entertainment tent, Dirt Road Rockers will perform Friday followed by Jerad Harness and Blackgrass Saturday.

Animal showings are a big part of the event, with 4-H contests for poultry and rabbit Wednesday, swine and steer on Thursday and junior events Friday.

Fair Board President Dan Byers tells Galesburg’s Midday on WGIL that with heat indices of up to 110 forecasted for Thursday and only barely letting up from there, they need to keep animal safety in mind.

“We’ve already discussed steps to be in line with the state as far as what procedure needs to take place if in fact our veterinarian feels it is in the best interest to perhaps release some of those animals a bit early if need be,” Byers says.

Every night there will be plenty of action at the grandstand.

Tonight is the tractor pull, figure 8 demolition derbies are Thursday and Friday with the classic demo derby Saturday. Byers says that the board floats ideas about bringing new events but it can be difficult to make it economically feasible.

Especially when events like the figure 8 are sure fire money makers.
